    auto siphon problems

I'm fairly new to homebrewing, only done a few batches. So I heard how great this auto siphon gadget is, but I did not have very good luck with it. I started it in a couple pumps and it flowed until about 4 or 5 inches from the bottom of the fermenter bucket. Must have been about a gallon of...

    Wort too hot?

Well I put it in my basement which is pretty cold right now, about 58F. At first the outside stick on thermometer did not register, but by the next day the temp was at 68F

    Wort too hot?

Thanks for your responses. When will the airlock stop bubbling? If I leave the wort fermenting longer do you think it will improve the taste?

    Wort too hot?

Hi everyone- I'd like to get some opinions on whether or not I will be ok with my batch of brew. I pitched the yeast into the primary but worried now that maybe the wort was too warm. I was a little too impatient. I think the temp was around 95F. The yeast took off and the air lock was...

    Easy Brews

thanks everyone. I will definitely look into getting that book. Sounds like just what I'm looking for. Once I get a little more experienced, I can try the harder recipe.

    Easy Brews

Hi, I'm a beginner and my one and only brew so far is an Irish Red Ale. It turned out fantastic! I'm looking for other "easy" brews. In general, are the Porters and Nutbrown Ales also easy brews to make? Are there others that can be considered easy. I will most likely buy a kit with the...

    Yeast recommendations for a newbie

Hi All, I've been reading about yeasts and I'm totally confused about what to buy. I've read some that say to use a fast acting yeast like Nottingham and others use slow acting yeast. I've only made one batch, an Irish Red Ale, and I used whatever dry yeast that came with the kit (I think it...

    the yeast doesn't taste nasty?

    yeast in bottom of bottles

So is it safe to say that the longer I keep the beer in the bottles before drinking, the less amount of yeast will remain in the bottle? Personally, I'm not worried about the yeast, I just don't want it to cause any adverse side affects for my guests. I've heard that it can be used as a...

    yeast in bottom of bottles

Hi all, I'm new to all this, so please bare with me. I'm told that once the brew is bottled that when you pour the beer you should do it carefully and leave about 1/2 inch in the bottle so you don't get the yeast from the bottom of the bottle (unless of course you like the yeast!). Anyway...

    jet bottle washer

Hi, I'm a newbie and I just bottled my 1st batch. I sanitized my bottles and I wanted to rinse the no rinse solution out of my bottles. I realize it was a no rinse solution, but I also noticed that there is a film on the bottles, so there is something left behind from this no rinse solution...

    bottling time

why the dishwasher door? is it because it won't reach? If I need to reuse the siphoning hose for bottling, would I have to re-sanitize it?

    bottling time

Hi all, This is my 1st batch of brew and right now it's in the fermenter doing it's thing. I am just wondering how much time it will take for bottling, from siphoning from fermenter to bottling bucket and then filling each bottle and capping. Seems like it might take awhile, I'm just...

    cooling wort

thanks Bendbrewer, that's what I thought the goal was, but I wasn't sure.

    cooling wort

Why should the wort be cooled to under 100 F (I've seen anywhere from under 100 F to under 80 F) before it is put into the primary fermenter? If I add cold water, which brings the temp down to about 65 F, couldn't the wort have been not quite as cool?
