    Health Alert

Math is fun You can make anything sound as good or as bad as you want. Lets say GI (Gastrointestinal) cancer happens in 1 out of 1000 people ( I don't know what the numbers, I've currently RDWHAHB a bit tonight, and I don't care to) But lets say 1 in 1,000 get some form of GI cancer...

    Grain mill

I just did my first brew with my shiny new Barley crusher, last weekend.. My mash efficiency went up from ~65% with the LHBS crush to ~77% with the BC default 0.039" gap. The metal machinework is clean, and seems top-notch. The knurling is sharp, and clean.. The woodwork, however.. The plate...

    First all-grain

Vorlauf? And for some reason, stickyness from wort you're drawing off the tun is fine with me.. I kinda like it.. I'm still awed at the conversion that takes place that transforms simple grains into an almost syruplike sticky, sweet fluid. But, I agree.. stickyness from extract is just a pain...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

If you use the Montrachet yeast, you will not need a blowoff tube.. I did a quick vid a while back showing apfelwein at the peak of its active fermentation.. Dunno why the vid quality got so bad, but you get an idea.. There is no krausen with Montrachet.. Dont know if the same is...

    Electronic Cigarettes

A lot of the hardware (most of the atomizers, cartomizers, cartridges, etc..) are made in China. The E-juice, or nic-juice made in china, while probably perfectly safe seems to be lower quality, and not as tasty, IMO.. The US made juices seem to be of a generally higher quality, and consistently...

    Electronic Cigarettes

Hi! Contrary to opinions, the only toxic compound in e-cigs is the nicotine itself. Nicotine is toxic, but has never been shown to be carcinogenic, or a mutagen by itself. Regarding the FDA, and regulatory stuff, well.. the FDA can go stick it where the sun don't shine, IMO (I was an...

    go f yourself, califronia!

Born, raised, and live in the napa valley, CA (Wine country) I agree with the OP.. F Cali. I cant stand the presumptuous, pompous asses around here, pushing their special interest agendas on everyone. Not to mention the gun, zoning, tax and other state laws so screwed up that lawmakers cant...

Anyone use the disposable oxygen tanks for aerating?

As far as a HEPA, I dont think so.. They do have sanitary in-line filters you can use to remove any particulate matter / bugs that could be in the gas stream. -Jason

    Barley Crusher- attaching a drill...

If I mill the shaft, and then have problems with it, I'll be the first one to say its my bad :) Trust me, I've cooked enough things in my history to take the blame when I start walking outside the box.. You know, I smoked 3 Playstation 2s (when they were new, and cost $300 Ea) before I...

    Barley Crusher- attaching a drill...

Yeah, but todays keyless chucks don't grip like the all-steel vice-like jaws of the old wristbreakers :) Especially my suzie-homemaker ryobi cordless :D Of course I'll try it stock first, Heck, if I dont have to tool up, mark, and layout a piece to be milled, all the better.

    Barley Crusher- attaching a drill...

I have a BC coming, but I have a concern too about the shaft slipping in the drill chuck. I'll try it stock, and see, but if it slips, I'll probably mount the shaft up in my (tabletop) mill, and machine 3 flats along the shaft to make it easier for the drill to grip. Its just a cold steel...

    Black-out Stout

Hmmm.. I've never heard of Great lakes blackout stout.. This is originally based off a clone of Red Hook double-black stout, but with some tweaks. I've tweaked it even more now, but I promise, the recipe as listed above, its pretty slammin' in the bottle.. The butter-zone As I've found...

    Indoor Butane Burner?

Heh, Okay, Cool.. (Padi cert OWD 1994, Went advanced in 1998, and master in 2000, here... Have dove alone a couple times. and dove "alone" with someone in the boat above me more times, but yeah, thats a no-no) Well, my concern as you agreed with was CO more than fire.. What gets the...

    Indoor Butane Burner?

Just curious, as I may be understanding you wrong, but why would a burner from a turkey fryer not be suggested to brew with? Im not pokin' at ya or anything, Im honestly wondering if theres some reason I don't know about. (I use a 10 yr old burner from a turkey fryer myself, and now i'm...

    Indoor Butane Burner?

Im just basing my opinions on: Range, Water heater, furnace, tested to government standards for indoor use, and the water heater and furnace were more than likely vented to the outside, anyway (chimney pipe) Turkey fryer base explicitly states not to be used indoors, and has no such...

    Indoor Butane Burner?

A propane burner (Turkey Frier burner) is fine on a balcony, or outdoor porch. I would not, however ever, burn any gas burner over, say 15,000BTUs indoors.. Ever.. (The large burner on a gas stove may be as high as 15K, but its a well carbed, and designed device to prevent CO buildup) but a $30...

    Total Infection

I loved that podcast, back when I first heard it.. Very informative.. I was going to suggest adding 1/4 cup white vinegar to the bleach / water mix to lower the PH, (as suggested in that podcast) as that will make the bleach a lot more effective at killing bugs, but with the PBW and star-san...

    Can Grain go bad?

Remember, you can use 8-14+ Lbs of base malt for each 5 Gal batch. So, at, say 10 Lbs base malt per brew, a bag is still only going to last 5 batches. at 1 batch per month, you'll go through 2.4 bags a year.
