    Over Carbonated Bottles

    Thanks, I'll try that.

    Over Carbonated Bottles

I know chilling does help a bit (just as with my last batch), but I didn't chill this one yet. That shouldn't be a deal braker though, should it? I should just be able to open these without chilling. Also, I made sure the the sugar was evenly distributed in the bottling bucket before...

    Over Carbonated Bottles

Since this is the 2nd batch in a row that this has happened to me, I must be doing something wrong. Once I open a bottle, it flows over on me instantly, however the beer itself tastes normal (not over carbonated at all). I made sure fermentation was over, so that's not it. 2 weeks primary...

    Question about making a starter

In most directions for making a yeast starter that I have seen, they mention using DME for the starter. If I only have LME for the current brew that I'm making, is it fine to use that for the starter, and if so how much should I use?

Is the amount of yeast directly proportional to the alcohol content?

Thanks, I was confused. Would you say then that the higher the OG, the more alcohol %?

Is the amount of yeast directly proportional to the alcohol content?

Is it directly proportional to how strong the beer will come out, or is it a little more complicated than that?

Too much gas in the bottle

Hmm, thanks for the quick replies. I used the 1-2-3 rule (1 week, 2 week, etc) and made sure to take a hydrometer reading before moving to the secondary. It has been in the bottles for about 6 weeks now. It's possible I didn't mix it correctly, but so far no flat bottles. The weird thing...

Too much gas in the bottle

With my last batch, every time I open a bottle from the batch there is a ton of gas. I have about two seconds to pour it in a glass before it spills over. However, taste-wise the beer itself is perfectly carbonated, which is why I can't say that I put in the wrong amount of sugar during the...

    Question about adding to secondary

    Question about using a thief

This really sounds like a beginner question, but I cannot figure out how to use the thief to extract samples from the glass carboys. I have the plastic one pictured here (plastic thing with a handle to the right of the caps)

    Question about adding to secondary

I suppose this is more on the scientific side, but when adding fruits/certain spices/etc, why does everyone add them to the secondary as opposed to the primary? Also, why do some add it during the bottling stage as opposed to the secondary? Thanks.

Few Questions About Transferring to Secondary

Thanks for clearing that up everyone!

Few Questions About Transferring to Secondary

I just transferred my first brew to secondary and was wondering, are you supposed to leave any liquid at all in the primary? From what I understood, the auto-siphon tool that I used was not supposed to touch the bottom of the primary carboy (otherwise the gunk would be transferred as well), and...

    Question about mr.beer recipes

Just like many others, I started off with Mr. Beer and already plan on purchasing more serious equipment...however I received 3 additional refills with the kit, so I started looking at how I can integrate these refills into recipes. Should I stick to the recipes on Mr.Beer and buy the...

Should my Mr. Beer stay in the primary longer than 7 days?

Sorry for the stupid question, but how can you see if the beer is still cloudy....the Mr.beer keg is pretty dark....or do you pour some out from the tap?
