    Quick fermentation

I know its a dead thread but it is mine so the beer was to that point the best I had made. a little thin but it was great even 4 months old. this was a beer to be drunken young. I have since done one with simcoe that was as good if not better. The simco I just did a straight 150F mash @ 1hr

Calcium chloride - http://www.howtobrew.com/section3/chapter15-4.html Magnesium chloride - https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/uncommon-brewing-salts-96303/ Potassium Bicarbonate - pretty vague here, but it does remove acid from the boil All of these things extra to the water just will alter the...

Lancaster/Reading/Allentown PA grain group buy- Round #3

Now I am a bit confused, is this the pricing from Hopsdirect or Bcrosbyhops.com? I'm not seeing Fuggle on Bcrosbyhops.com. Also, I know it's going to be substantially chaper than local HBS, but I was wondering if we could get a price list at least for the non web listed varieties.

Best way to store yeast cake and how long is it good?

I have a one month old I will try to make a starter soon with it, but it came off a cake that started with a 1.062 OG, so I need to brew a recipe darker and higher to avoid any flavours or characteristics of the old beer. It may be a bit but I will post here when I try one. The strain I will...

Best way to store yeast cake and how long is it good?

Agreed topend. I rinse in 70-75F water to remove trub and let settle, then I dump from one sanitized container to smaller, fridge friendly, mason jars or even small (<1 liter) soda bottles. I've caught viable yeast without needing to repurchase. I believe the wisdom is, pitch up in gravity...

Rubbermaid 10 Gallon Cooler MLT Conversion

I'm months out from doing any system like that, but this is good info that I will need to go 1/2 in. for compatability to pumps etc. Guess I know what I need to do to get these setup. Now I don't know if I want to remod mine, or to start fresh and sell this one off to a friend.

    Cracked Erlenmeyer

I'm surprised it didn't pop like a light bulb on you. Don't worry, I can't count how many cheap or even expensive lessons I've learned (not necessarily homebrewing related) over the years.

Rubbermaid 10 Gallon Cooler MLT Conversion

I did mine exactly the same as the linked post with 3/8 all around. It was my first build I didn't need to run back to the hardware store. Do you think there will be any benefit to 1/2, as in a sparge, I don't look for speed. "How to brew" lists 1qt/min and I can grab this easily with just...

    Critique my SMASH

Missed the part where you actually brewed them, my mistake in reading. Are they in the fermenter, or done already? I'm interested to hear about the difference now.

    Critique my SMASH

I did a 2-row centennial SMASH a few weeks ago that just went to bottle yesterday. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/quick-fermentation-238784/ I used only 1oz of hops total. I considered dry hopping but it tasted good at my last reading. Yours will have a bit more body with the Maris Otter...

    Dry Hop in Keg Concerns

Oil floats it water. It would be at the top rather than the bottom. Oil density is less than that of water. I don't have a keg, but it seems like dry hopping in the secondary under pressure. I give my vote to give it some time and RDWHAHB. Just not that brew for a bit.

So, what's the big deal with yeast starters?

Even with the old standard safale-05 I make sure to rehydrate. It just looks better going into the wort (subjective), and also there is more surface area since the yeast is dissolved. Also, I don't need to look at dates on packages. When it foams and bubbles it's alright to pitch. It will...
