Help me save my under-carbed batch

Carb tabs, brilliant! I use Cooper's about a week ago, popped each bottle and tossed in one tab per bottle and re-capped. After just one week we are WAY farther along than before. Maybe next time I'll give raisins a try, sounds like a fun experiment. My only explanation at this point would...

Hydrometer: Triple Scale #6800 (USA) vs. Triple Scale Beer & Wine (FR)

Ouch, I'd guess the only way the USA made model is that far off is if the paper inside has dislodged and slid down (or is that up?). You might be able to tell, on mine the paper is held in place with a little dab of red glue. Either way, that one is way out off from standard 1.000 in water...

Help me save my under-carbed batch

2 days i the fridge... and just... nothing (or nearly nothing, the weakest, most tragic pfft you've ever heard) and the beer is flat as a board. jonmohno - I know... it should have been 3 oz for 2.2 vol, but I accidentally wrote down 1.2 and didn't question it when calculating...

Help me save my under-carbed batch

Hey guys, I was trying to carb up a 5 gal batch of Irish Red Ale to style. Punched in my numbers for 1.225 co2 volume and got 1oz (28g) of cane sugar to add (this was my mistake, I meant to do 2.25!!). Now 5 weeks later and I get just the slightest puff on opening, no head and little if ANY...

    Barley Wine Recipe Help

Apologies I cannot comment on how good of a barley wine your recipe will make. I've only had a handful of the style and never brewed one. However, I'm concerned that you're going to have trouble hitting that final gravity without any help from some simple sugar. I'm also unfamiliar with that...

    Bottling an Oud Bruin early

Thanks everyone for the advice. I checked today and the gravity is only down to 1.009. There is only the very beginnings of a pellicle on top. Sample tasted pretty good though... I re-did my math when I noticed I brewed this on 12/15/10 - so in reality it's only been in secondary with...

    Bottling an Oud Bruin early

Hey guys, Apologies if this has been beaten to death, attempted a search with no relevant results. Looks like we'll be moving soon, so the Oud Bruin I have aging I'm thinking will be less risky to move in bottles than in the carboy. I pitched the Roeselare blend after near full...

Adding oak chips the the secondary.. too late?

I've only done one oaked batch, and that with 1oz of cubes in secondary for about a week. I prefer my oak flavors to be in the background, so I kept it conservative. With 2.5oz of chips in 5 gallons I'd be checking that beer every 2-3 days to make sure I didn't over do it. Blake

    After drinking homebrew...

no need here when the dog routinely gets into the leftover grains in the composter (no hop debris, dangerous)... I'm surprised we don't pass out from lack of oxygen on those days.

    fermentation question

Definitely all OK. The airlock is a false indicator of fermentation, the only true way to see how it's going is by taking a sample and reading gravity via hydrometer. Blake

    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

Yeah I'd leave it be for the 3 weeks, then rack onto the bourbon / oak when you get back. It should be done fermenting completely and will give the yeast some time to clean up any off flavors present. There are pros and cons to every facet of brewing (so I am finding out ;) Good choice on...

bottling question why use a bottling wand?

THIS, big time. The first time I used my bottling bucket I had just used my only wand for bottling up an Oud Bruin (sour beer). Not wanting to contaminate my RIS I took a 10" piece of hose and attached it to the spigot, opening and closing the valve for every bottle, NEVER AGAIN. Not only...

Ever have a credit card number stolen???

As another data point, I placed an order through AHS on 1/15 and have had no fraudulent activity. That being said I'll be contacting Amex today and asking that they issue a new number. rustbucket, Most Debit transactions are under the SAME protection as a regular Credit Card (Visa, Master...

    My first batch: Big Mistake?

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. Airlock activity isn't a 100% guarantee of fermentation activity. I'd let that finish out, maybe another week or two and check your gravity 3 days in a row. If it's the same over a 3 day period then prepare more priming sugar and bottle it up. All you...
