    Trub

Since I do partial boils and use the transfer from kettle to bucket as part of the aeration I just line the bucket with a paint strainer, dump in the wort (trub and all) then lift the strainer out of the bucket. to each his own...

    This will be ok??

Any source for that information? My understanding is hops are extremely unlikely sources of contamination and should function just the opposite. Additionally, my understanding is waiting on fermentation to complete prior to dry-hopping is more about the concept that active fermentation will...

    Skeptical brew buddies

Founder's Red's Rye PA is a phenomenal example of a successful American beer incorporating rye (along with the examples already posted).

    Skeptical brew buddies

Beer Snob != Beer Geek I give snobbery a negative connotation. It is NOT snobbish to elect to no longer drink something you dislike so long as you can clearly state why you dislike it and give everyone else the freedom to like it regardless.

    Full vs partial boil

Incorrect. You will not lose gravity points by reducing the boil time of the extract. Hops utilization will be affected to some degree depending on when the hops are added and when the extract is added. You may gain IBUs if you take a given recipe and add the extract later but do not adjust the...

    Should i add extra LME?

Did you do any late extract additions or did you just dump it all in at the start of the boil?

    fastest fermentation i've seen...

Agreed, don't dispose of good practice now. Take gravity readings over time make sure it's done. US-05 always attenuates more than calculated for me.

    sterilizing wine thiefs

Spray the outside with star san. Fill the inside either with a pouring container or just bounce the thief up and down inside a column of star san. Star san foam does make taking readings a bit more difficult. Thanks to wyzazz for pointing out that santization is the effect not sterilization.

    Bucket priming?

OP qualified his plan by installing a spigot first. :D

General flip top bottle sanitizing question.

Interesting, I just bring the bottle down next to the top of the vinator so that the mouth is just above it and the lid is touching the spigot then just move the bottle over the spigot and the spigot performs the same function as Revvy's thumb. It sounds weird to type it out but it is the most...

    Bucket priming?

Have fun refrigerating the bucket. I say in an ultra neato, lalala, ideal happy-fun-time world that yes, it could be done. But here we are in reality-ville and your first issue is going to be in that simple sounding phrase, "then seal it up". There's been some research on the actual PSI...

bottling for the first time..what did you do wrong?

Were you racking on top of a liquid solution placed into the bucket first?

bottling for the first time..what did you do wrong?

This! I've not made mistakes while bottling. I've made many other mistakes in the rest of the process but none during bottling. I do obsessively add up the total volume of the various containers I intend to fill against the amount in the bucket and sanitize a few extra bottles and even more...

General flip top bottle sanitizing question.

I use a vinator and a tree and I also use a lot of swing top bottles. With the vinator you have a handy pool of sanitizer to dip the lid into right before or after you hose out the bottle. You can also toss your caps in there if you are using some regular bottles as well. The Ferrari trees...

    Papazian vs. Palmer

I read Charlie P's book 3 or 4 times over the course of about 2 years while I slowly collected brewing equipment but I never actually had the confidence to jump in. The very day I found Palmer's online book I picked up the ingredients and made a damn fine beer. I think How to Brew does a much...
