Worth cleaning out? Or risk not worth reward?

This isn't 100% the same thing, but I once picked up some ancient Coca-Cola bottles that were laying out in the woods, partially buried and half-full of dirt and moss. I can't remember exactly what I used (probably oxy clean), but they cleaned right up and never caused any problems with...

Artificially limiting the supply results in higher rated beer

When you have to go out of your way to get something, the people who manage to find it tend to be the ones that went looking for it.

    110V for 10 Gallon Batches - Possible?

Just remember -- every element you use, is an element you will have to clean! Not that it's difficult or anything, but having to wash 3 of 'em seems like something that would get old quickly. As for wattage, I have found that a 5500W element running at about 60% (around 3300W) does a good job...

    Done with Electric Brewing

I've been boiling my batches using a 5500W element from Home Depot with no problems. It is one of the fold-back types, sold as LWD, but I would guess it's still a pretty high watt density when the heat is turned up. One thing I can think of.. how close is the element to the side or bottom of...

    Help Repurposing a power supply

Black is very likely to be the minus side. Red and yellow are probably the 5 and 12V, but which is which could definitely go either way. You do want to be sure you use the right one, because you can actually burn out a motor by using too low a voltage. If it's a 12V pump, and your supply...

Expert help needed with my fungal infection!

That looks like it could be yeast, and doesn't look like any infection I know of, so I'm gonna go ahead and vote "yeast". What's it taste like? Does it have the amount of carbonation you expected?

Forgot the OG, should I risk taking a Hydrometer reading?

For your second batch, I would say you should probably take a gravity reading, at least at bottling time. That will help you match up what you're seeing, with what you know about fermentation. Some of my friends will get on me about this forever, but I haven't taken any SG readings at all...

    What are you drinking now?

Drinking a Bud Light right now. :)

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

For some reason, a lot of the ones I get seem to involve my bathtub? One day, I'm going to build a manifold to fit my tub and actually mash a batch in it, just for these folks! :D

    Newb...2 elements 1 ssr, where did i go wrong? {help}

Not sure how that SSR was rated, but a lot of things are not actually usable right up to their rating, because that requires you to keep the case of the device at room temperature. An 80A SSR (and a brand-name one at that) is a step in the right direction, but be sure the heat sink is enough --...

My (soon to be) all electric brewery!

And four more pics.. -The rear of the brew cart. The valves allow the plate chiller to be bypassed during mash, used for chilling, and flushed forward and in reverse for cleaning. In the last 15 minutes of the boil, with the chiller in the loop, the RIMS tube can be used to help re-heat the...

My (soon to be) all electric brewery!

OK.. lots of progress, lots of pics, so it will have to be two posts! The brew cart is built and a little bit tested (I powered it up and let it pulse power to a table lamp, through a transformer), and I have the ingredients on hand for its first brew. The electronics are the same as what is...

"Portable" E-Brew setup For work event?

This might be off topic (for the electric forum), but if you're going to buy new stuff just for this, why not just use propane?

My (soon to be) all electric brewery!

Now (finally), the software is in a state where it should be usable! The temperature regulation screen is in and the PID loop is working in a way that looks reasonable. There's no guarantee that I won't find any problems (actually I probably will), but I can now move on with the build. There...

    My 1 bbl. system build

I'm just now seeing this thread, so I'm a little late to the party, but I think I speak for all of us when I say... DAMMMMMMN! I would give thoughts and advice.. but it occurred to me that I'm a total noob compared to a lot of people on here, when it comes to that size system :mug:

My (soon to be) all electric brewery!

Software is SUCH a pain!!! I hate it! It's not that I'm bad at it, but it hit me today that the feeling I get from writing software is the same as when I was a kid, doing homework. Lame! No wonder it's gone so slow, when I almost never want to work on it... lol Fortunately, the software is...

So what is your house beer?

I have had the same experience... A lot of my BMC-loving friends who "don't like that dark beer", are all over the 80/ when it appears, for some reason. I have a few "house" beers, and that 80 is one of 'em. Two others would be a nut brown I found in Beer Captured, and a "Copper Ale" recipe...

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

That sounds like a cool project! I'd be interested to see what kind of readings you'd get during fermentation. Is that the same Festo (on one of the silk layers, it looks like) that makes a lot of air cylinders and such? Here's one of my designs -- a little embedded computer based on an ARM926...

    Location, Location, Location???

The greenhouse also looks like it would be easier with respect to ventilation. This is important if you're going to be using propane. There's also a lot of steam produced during the boil, which you will want to deal with somehow. However, all those things could technically be fixed in the...

My Electric Build - Introducing What Became Brewmaster Controls
