    When to rack

Just brewed my first sour beer and I'm pumped! I used the sour ale blend from white labs. The krausen has fallen back into the beer but no pellicle has formed. I plan on racking it onto a couple pounds of cherries and figs and letting it ride for as long as I can wait. Should I wait for a while...

    My beer is migrating...

Recently I've noticed that when not being used frequently, my beer is migrating from the beer out lines beck into to keg, thusly laving the lines dry and crudy looking. So far it hasn't been a big deal, just pour a beer as usual, only there is a bit more foam than usual for the first pour. As...

    something about Chicago...

I'm trying to remember the name of a really cheap, really huge homebrew/kegging site. I feel like an idiot for not remembering it....chicago supply? the chicago company? WTF? anyone? Beuller?

    Heffe kegging proposal.

I'm going to be kegging a hefe in a couple days and I want it to remain nice and cloudy. My idea, or maybe someone else' idea, is to run a tube from the "gas in" dip tube down to the bottom of the keg to stir up the sediment any time gas is going into the keg. Am I in for trouble? Or just good...

    Water report?

Going to be sending in a sample of my tap water for a report soon and I have a dumb question... when using is to brew I send it through a carbon filter. Should I send the lab filtered or unfiltered water? I'm thinking filtered...whats everyone else do?

    Leaky regulator relief valve?

I ordered a kit from kegconnection a couple weeks ago and finally got around to hooking everything up today. The only thing is that I can hear a slight hissing sound coming from a small hole on the back of the pressure relief valve on one of the low pressure gauges. I'm thinking this is just...

keggels and diptubes and scrubbies, oh my!

So..... I have a keggle with an L shaped diptube that points to the bottom of the keggle. I then put a stainless steel scrubby guy between it and the bottom of the keggle. I use the nylon paint stainer bag for hops. I STILL cant get this bugger to drain worth a damn. The slightest amount of...

    Cold weather brewing is...

for the fricking birds!!! OK, so I'm a southern guy who's not used to working in sub freezing temps. Boy does it suck! When I went to heat my HLT this morning it was only 24F. My HLT and BK are un insulated kegs and man did it sure take FOREVER for both of them to heat up, especially with...

    Moldy Oldies

I use a chest freezer with a temp controller as a fermentation chamber. Lately I've been getting mold due to the moister that accumulates in there. I was thinking about throwing a bucket of damp-rid in there. Anyone else have this problem and come up with a better way? -Zach

Ball Valve users: Pro tip of the day!

After cleaning and reassembling your valves, make sure that you have screwed them back on to your kettle the right direction. This will prevent you from having a kettle full of wort that you can't open the valve to drain.:ban: That is all, carry on. (There will be peace when you are done.)

How NOT to make a starter; a cautionary tale

So I had 1200Ml's of starter going in a flask on my stove. Near the end of a few minutes of boiling I realize that I have neglected to throw the stir bar in. No biggie, or so I thought. Tilted the flask to one side, slid the stir bar in and BLAMO!:o The wort instantly goes full boil and shoots...

U-Haul is my new best friend!

Ever since I first started using a propane burner I've been taking my cylinders to the local mega builders supply shack near me. I was driving past the local U-haul and I noticed that they had a sign about refilling your tanks there and that it was a lot cheaper. Decided to try it. Normally I...

    Hops strainer for a keggle

Ive been using a keegle now for a while, but yesterday was the first brew that I used my new diptube on. I got a SS scrubbie to put under it to filter out hops and break. Well, it worked about as well as a screen door on a submarine. Instant and ongoing clog. Had to spray starsan all over my...

    I'm in over my head...

I think I've reached obsession level. Stacked all my brew pots up today after I cleaned them and it was pretty far over my head. I've gotta cut back!

    SS scrubbies

OK, this is going to sound like a really dumb question, BUT, where so you guys get your scrubbies? Once apun a time I worked in a restaurant that had really great ones, big and heavy duty. Today I went to the homedepot with no luck and I dont know that they sell any, besides tiny ones a the...

    Help me build my keggle!

So I just got a keg that I'm going to be converting to a keggle. I wanted some advice from people on how far off the bottom they put their valve. I want it high enough to leave hops and hot break behind, but low enough to avoid wort waste. Any ideas?

    Smallest usuable chest freezer

I'm looking for the smallest chest freezer that can hold a 6gal carboy. Ive seen a couple from the 5-6 cubic foot range that look like they would work with some slight modifications such as the 2x4 lip that people put around their keezers. This mod is fine for me as I may very well use this...

How yeast works, a scientific study

In 1839 the Annals of Chemistry, Volume 29, by Friedrich Woehler and Justus von Liebig, stated: "Beer yeast, when dispersed in water, breaks down into an infinite number of small spheres. If these spheres are transferred into an aqueous solution of sugar, they develop into small animals. They...
