Krausen in airlock; switched to blow-off tube

Doesn't sound like you have too much to be worried about... Everyone on here will tell you that bubbling is not a reliable sign of anything. Some fermentations bubble for a day, some for 2 weeks, some not at all... You mentioned your "cup of sanitized water"- is that what your blow-off...

    When to add honey?

Good info, thanks guys. I did some more searching (probably should have done it PRIOR to my post  and it sounds like a lot of people are saying if you want honey taste (which I do) you should use honey malt instead of actual honey. So I think for the first attempt I'm going to keep...

    When to add honey?

I've got a recipe for a Cinnamon Honey Ale- it's as follows: 6 lbs Amber DME .75 lbs Caramel/Crystal 40L 3 lbs honey 1 oz Northern Brewer (60 mins) .5 oz Cascade (60 mins) 1.5 oz Tettnang (20 mins) 1 Tbsp Cinnamon at flameout Wyeast American Ale Do I add the honey at the same...

Krausen in airlock; switched to blow-off tube

That almost EXACTLY mirrors what happened with me. Brewing an IPA, OG was 1.066, though I used Wyeast American Ale yeast. I tried cleaning and re-sanitizing my airlock; but after doing that 3 times in the course of about an hour, I said to hell with it and put the blow-off tube on. no...

Krausen in airlock; switched to blow-off tube

Definitely will be starting with the blow-off from now on. It's good to be re-assured that nothing probably made it's way in there, tho! I will tell you it was a pretty hectic process when I first put the airlock onto the IPA: 1) See that krausen is bubbling into airlock  2) Wash...

Krausen in airlock; switched to blow-off tube

Last weekend I started 2 new batches, an IPA on friday night, and a wheat on saturday morning :ban: Both are fermenting in better bottle carboys. On Sunday when I checked on them, the IPA had krausen in the airlock- so I took the rubber stopper out, cleaned it and the airlock, sanitized...

Gumballhead Clone - dry hopping question

Wow am I getting excited to try this one. Doesn't sound too complicated at all! Glad to hear it worked out for you- and as much as I love Gumballhead (it's easily in my top 3 beers) I really like the sound of the changes that you made to it. I'm starting a batch of a Mulberry Cream...

    First Batch Taste Test

I was reading some other threads that are similar to mine, and I know that I'm going to hear "wait" and "give it time", so I know that is what I have to do... I guess I'm just wondering how flavor is affected the longer it sits in the bottle? Does it lose bitterness? does a longer wait in...

    First Batch Taste Test

Firstly, I know that I definitely jumped the gun a bit on this one, I was just so damn anxious I had to give it a try! So, I brewed up a batch of Brewers Best Pale Ale. Boiled 3 weeks ago Two weeks in fermentation. Gravity readings were steady at 1.014 for about 3 days straight, so I...

    Adding water mid-way through fermentation?

I waited a while to let it cool before pitching the yeast. Everything else was done exactly to spec, only problem in this batch was that I deformed my carboy! OG was fine, just a tiny bit off what I was expecting. I'll let it be though. Hell I like strong beer... Thanks for the help all!

    Adding water mid-way through fermentation?

2 days ago I boiled a batch and transferred to a carboy for fermentation. When I was pouring into the carboy, the wort was still a bit hot and my carboy (plastic) warped a bit at the bottom, so the inside volume is a bit lower than it should be. So basically after I added water to the wort...

    Hello from Illinois!

First batch was a pale ale, I'll be bottling that tonight. 2nd batch started on Saturday- a Fat Tire replica recipe. Fermentation started VERY slowly, actually kind of scared me a bit... I thought I had screwed something up. But it seems to be moving along nicely now. Once I get the pale...
