Profile on Mikkeller and Evil Twin in NY Times

For those who don't get it, there's a profile of the brothers who founded Mikkeller and Evil Twin in the New York Times. Interesting reading. One of the few times that a larger media outlet seems to get a lot of beer and brewing descriptions pretty much right, too. FWIW, I'm somehow less...

    Large chunks = Cold Break?

Just on an off chance - did you use whole hops? One time I had a bag rupture when dry-hopping and the hop leaves were all throughout the beer. Really annoying. They went through the tubing, no problem, and I was picking them out of my teeth after drinking. It's hard to tell from the video.

Just wanted to put in a good word for MoreBeer.

No affiliation, but I figured I'd share this, because honest vendors deserve the credit. Earlier in the week I ordered an oxygen system from MoreBeer, because it was a Deal of the Day. As I needed a bunch of odds and ends here and there, I was on the cart a little while. So while the coupon...

Review of Milwaukee MA871 Digital Refractometer

Glad to hear it. I get the same feeling with my 'analog' refractometer. I've seen the same thing with the sample drying out, particularly if I use a hot sample of wort. I've generally filled an eyedropper and then waited for it to cool before putting a drop on the lens. I've added this to my...

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

Actually, Ivan, it's ~28.6%. I wonder how much softer demand will be. These items are so hot, though, that probably some cooling off would help them to build some supply and get a bit more ahead of their game. I can see what MB is thinking - this price point fits in between the cheap plastic...

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

Yup. I see it now. Thanks. Obviously they've been advertising $175 as the introductory price, and now they can't undercut MB. This will be the MB price as well, most likely.

JR, where do you see that? (I'm curious to check.) Is it already showing up on the MB page? While I'd expect some price movement due to how hot demand is on these things, I'm surprised they'd break the $200 barrier on these.

Awesome list, BelgianTex. Unfortunately that's so many possibilities! I'm a fan of Van Steenberge, but have never had their Sparta pils. Seems like it's listed as a 'typical' Czech pils.

    Ringwood 1187 - Open Fermentation?

Covering the fermenter with a towel works too. It keeps the dust out, which is what is the most dangerous in terms of carrying an infection into your beer. (This is the second thread today I gave this advice on - I'm going to be known as the 'towel guy.') Just an old, but clean, beach towel that...

    Please help, fermentation barrel

I've had the airlock clog on very active ferments, and the pressure from the gas will blow the top off. I've had it happen at least twice that I remember. It's a pretty violent explosion, but I didn't have to clean up much beer. It does spew yeast all over the place, which is messy to clean. One...

Hey, as far as I understand it, most breweries use commercial yeast banks to house their yeast. Those banks will also sell that yeast under a generic name of some sort. So all of the Wyeast/White Labs strains are yeasts that are used commercially, because those yeasts have known fermentation...

Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

Finished mine - kind of - today. It's been a long haul, lately, and after taking apart my last mill, I'm kicking myself. That thing was rock solid, and this one shakes like Steve the monkey on gummy bears. Still, it works. There's another version already in the planning, but this will do until I...

    Heatsick ....WoW

Not to start plastic wars 2.0 (another bucket thread!) but... PVC contains phthalates. Phthalates are bad. I wouldn't put that in my beer, and I wouldn't drink anybody's beer made with it. I've had too many family members die of cancer - young, too - to mess with this kind of stuff. For...

This yeast is due up for release again as a platinum strain. I'm curious as the description is that it comes from, "a very old brewery in West Belgium." Most people assume that it's Stella yeast, because that brewery is very old, but Leuven is not in West Belgium. Anybody have any guesses...

I never got the email with the link to the store. Just the updates. Seems like they sold out quickly. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Home Brew mobile app

Using hardiePanel in your DIY homebrewery?

Sorry, I realize that my reply sounded kind of dismissive. That's not the tone I really meant. HardiePanel is a composite of cement and wood. It's very, very durable. It's not at all flammable. I also don't know that it would be recommended for this type of installation. I bet it heats up...

Using hardiePanel in your DIY homebrewery?

Are you thinking of spraying down your setup? Anyway, Hardipanel is quality material. What are you worried about? As long as you install it properly, that stuff is bomb-proof.

    moving as a brewer sucks...

Heh. No kidding. Moved a ton of times, and each time had to close down shop. Finally we moved into a 'fixer-upper' that would be 'fun' to, you know, re-do the kitchen (down to the studs) and then the bathroom, and then the baby room, and then... years go by and no brew. I'm just recovering now...

    Recipe suggestions using fresh honey

Have you seen/tried Skotrat's B52 Honey Wheat? I've made it several times, and I'm a big fan of the recipe. Got a whole party full of different sorts of people loaded one year when my nephew was baptized. If I'm not mistaken, it was the choice for Big Brew one year... Maybe I'm wrong about...

    Anybody use these RO Systems?

Thanks guys. AJ, your reply is basically what I didn't want to hear, but I figured was true. Our water is rather hard, and I've been considering a softener. Looks like I have to figure out which one to get before I proceed. Our hardness as CaCO3 is 233 ppm. While not 'off the charts,' it's...
