Removing the core from a sanke, SUPRISE!

The last time I tried to take apart an old school screw style sanke the threads on the spear where so corroded that I completely destroyed the spear and never even got the threads loose. Not that it really mattered, my lid just isn't as pretty.

    Controlling yeast by lights

Ha.. as I read it the controls engineer side of me said meh. The automation is trivial once you've got the yeast growing the right proteins and closing your loop for ya. Now, what you'd want this kind of control for in a bio-reactor I haven't a clue.

    Homemade Mash Paddle Pics

Nice. I'll have to look into butcher block oil. Flavorless? I know tung oil is preservative but nasty. Pic of one my buddy cut out for me today should be attached. My design, his saw. We had to buy a $20 board. :( :mug:

    Hey

Are you waiting til bottling to add the Hazelnut to that porter? It's pretty fun doing some trial additions and tasting. There's an odd smoothing effect that it has over the chocolate, long before you add enough that the hazelnut flavor is noticeable. :mug:

    what to do....

Lager yeasts can't survive above 90, ale yeast loves the heat until about 95 for many strains. Guess I shouldn't say it kills them, but they switch into protection mode and shut down the ferment. Brewers' yeasts have been bred to do well at cooler temperatures, since the cool gives them a...

    question about motorizing my mill

What size couplings did you get? according to Grainger "1⁄4 to 1⁄2" coupling hubs have no keyway. Hollow-head set screws." If I remember right the barley crushers have a 3/8" shaft so that side of the coupler should have a set screw. If not...talk to Grainger. When installing the...

    what to do....

What does your gravity read now? What's it taste like? You're likely fine. Did you ferment a little warm? Yeast ferment more quickly the warmer they get. As long as you haven't chilled the beer enough to drop all the yeast (40ish F) or heated it enough to killed them (90ish F), they're in...

    Any brew-software for Android?

Neat. Just got an android phone. Didn't think I'd find a brewing app coming along this nicely. I sent you a message via your app regarding helping out with the project. I'd love to take a look at the project and see if I can grok enough to be useful. I've always wanted to upgrade ProMash..
