    root beer keg

Well....a couple months ago I though I would bond with my son and make him some birch beer and cream soda. spent grain?

So, done my 3rd all grain. Loving it. I want to know what others do with their spent grain? There has to be nutritional value....seems like such a waste to throw it in the trash!

    Alpha Beta ohh ahh!

But seriously.......... I am relatively new to all grain and I am seeing some mash steps that raise this question. The NB all grains directions want a Beta rest followed by an Alpha rest. With my current equiptment I cannot do it in this manner. I can however start at the higher temp for...

    First AG...questioning my set up.

So I've done alot of research on this and I feel pretty confident. However I do know to expect bumps along the way. I made my Mash tun with a toilet hose. it was a vynl sheath not a stainless sheath. I did use coiled wire inside to give it a "back bone"......should I worry about the vynl sheath??

    Wyeast 4783 Rudesheimer

I bought a mead kit from NB on 1/25/2011. I've never made a Mead, this is a trial for my wife. So, 3 months later I smack the pack and go ahead and prep everything. 6 hours later and the bag has not expanded much at all. I go to Wyeast web site. A FAQ says that after 2 months you may not see...

    How sanitary/aseptic are we?

Well, I am a microbiologist by trade, so I might know a thing or two. On brew day when the wort is ready I sanitize just like anyone else I suppose. I'll use a cleaner then a sanitizer. While I'm doing it I'm always wearing non-latex gloves and I have a spray bottle filled with 70% alcohol. I...

So, I have collected all that I need minus a few things to try my hand at an all grain recipe. I only have a Mash tun/sparg bucket and a propane burner left to purchase and/or build. I have a plan to convert a large picnic cooler into my mash tun and was thinking of putting off the burner...

Who knows the science of what goes on?

I am a Microbiologist by trade....so I know what goes on with yeast and the needs of the yeast, and I know how to be sanitary and how to stay sanitary. What I don't know or understand circles around mainly the boil. What is happening to the sugars? What is happening to the Hops? How does time...
