Accidental Sour Beer -- Can I serve it?

I'm not entirely a beginner -- this was my 52nd beer -- but this problem is a first for me. I brewed a Cali Common, tested it prior to a dry hop around week 2, removed the hops at week 3, and then tested it again at week 5 when I went to keg. At week 2 it was a balanced beer with a slight...

The Wife helped with last night's apfelwein!

And then she wrote about it on her blog, DIY or BUY: http://diybuy.wordpress.com/2010/12/21/apfelwein-hard-cider/ I consider this awesome on many levels: She writes well, and thus it's generally entertaining to read. Many of our friends read her blog, and perhaps this will encourage...

RobbyG's 7.2 Cu. Ft. Keezer Project

After much planning and three part-time weekends worth of work, my keezer/kegerator is complete! The base of the kegerator is a white 7.2 Cu. Ft. E-Wave chest freezer (an E-Wave is a rebranded Magic Chef, which can hold 6 corny kegs) that I got used off Craigslist for $100. I'd originally...

Using Amylase Enzyme to Drop My FG?

I brewed my second-ever partial mash a few weeks ago, which also happened to be my first-ever 5 gallon batch (I did a dozen or so 2-gallon batches first). It was a Northern English Brown Ale cobbled together from various recipes on HBT that finished at a respectable OG of 1.047. However, I...

    Painting a White Freezer Black

I picked myself up a lightly used Magic Chef 7.2 Cu. Ft. freezer last weekend, which was a fantastic find as it will be able to hold 6 ball lock kegs and a 5lb CO2 tank once my collar is built. The only real downside is I was planning a black keezer build and this one is white. Now, I know...

    Next time you're in Iowa...

Be sure to visit el Bait Shop in downtown Des Moines. They don't brew themselves, but they have a VERY respectable selection of beers to choose from, including beers from a lot of the area breweries. It's always an awe-inspiring sight when I walk in the door.

Liquid yeast starter necessary for 2 gallon batch?

Hello all, I'm planning to brew a 2-gallon batch of California Common on Tuesday. I'm contemplating using Wyeast #2112 as my yeast this time around, as it looks to be a common yeast of choice for this style. This would be the first time I've used liquid yeast, so I suppose I'm a little...

    An inaccurate hydrometer?

Hi all - I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks, but I finally have a question that I don't see already answered. :) I'm currently less-than-patiently waiting for my 5th batch, a extract-based blonde ale, to be ready to bottle. Before brewing this one, I decided to "invest" in a...
