    Topping up an All-grain

Ok, kind of a dumb question; When doing extract with grain, I end up with about 3 gallons for fermentation and I top up to 5 gs with water as per the usual instructions. I've started all-graining and my post boil volume has been just under 3 gs when I was aiming for 5gs. Besides the...

    OG goes up?

Hi, I'm going to assume my Hydrometer was off because I didn't think this was possible. My Beginning Gravity at start of boil was 1050 but my Starting Gravity post boil was 1058. Is that even possible or did I goof my measurements? Cheers, Jay

    Figuring Final Gravity

Hello, Being only my second all-grain and giddy with excitement & being careful to do everything else, I took an SG just prior to boil but forget to get a OG when I pitched my yeast and began fermentation. Question is, can I roughly figure out my abv by using the SG and getting a FG once...

    Bottling a weizen

Hi, I just did my first All Grain :ban: , a weizen, and fermnetation has been going well. I know I can due the standard dextrose-for-bottling, but I've also read various items on bottling a weizen and how using DME or even making a speise (sp?) will make bottling the beer more traditional...

    Aeration of first All grain

Hi, I'm tackling my first all grain this weekend:ban: Question: I think I still need something for aeration of the wort for fermentation. I understand with Extract and Partials adding the extra couple of gallons of water introduces oxygen for the yeast, but an all-grain full-boil doesn't...

    New Keg... now what?

I'm assuming this should be relatively easy, but I aquired a Sanke Keg from my Brew Supply store, now I need to cut 'er open to use as my main boil pot. Anyone have an idea as to what tools would be best serve to do this? Thanks, Jay

    Full Boil Extract with Grain

Hi, Finallly getting a large keg for using as a boil pot but my mash tun is still a work in progress. Is there any benefit to doing a full 5 gallon boil if I'm only using Extract with Grain? Just curious. Cheers, Jay

    chilling method

Hi I will be making a Creemore clone taken from the BYO Clone recipe edition and the chilling method for the Creemore was to cover pot and put in ice bath, till sides are cool to the touch. I normally use a wort chiller, but thought about following the directions as given, but I also recall...

    PM in Bottling Bucket

Hi, Just a thought; I'm in the process of putting together all the bits & pieces to convert my cooler into a mash tun, and was wondering if I could get away with doing a Partial Mash, using my bottling bucket. It's a 5 gallon bucket, has a spigot and I don't see any immediate problems. I...

    Bottle it or Burn it

Hi Got a Dry Stout that I was going to bottle this Sunday. It will be 2 weeks in the Secondary as of then. Problem is white film has built itself up on the top layer of the beer. Do I just chuck it, or should I proceed anyway? Any thoughts on what the heck it is? I haven't had this...

    Too High OG/FG

Hi Made a KilKenny-esqu clone with 3 Litres of Pale LME, 500 Grams Crystal Malt, 100 grams Chocolate. Used a WL004 (english Ale) Liquid Yeast vile. MY OG was 1070, FG was 1016. I know this is too high for the style, I'm now thinking I had too much LME/Crystal Malt combo. Any thougths...

    Bottling and Carbonation

Greetings, I use the standard 3/4 Dextrose, 1 cup boiled water for bottling. I usually let it cool down, put in my bottling bucket, then siphon over the beer. I do find a bit of inconsistency, from bottle to bottle, in regards to how much carbonation I tend to get from my bottles. Anyone...

    Cleaning out the cupboard

So I've got 200 grams of Carastan, 50 grams of Chocolate and 150g of Black Patent. Any thoughts on what I can do, besides buying a bunch more grain?

    Smaller batches and Head Space

Hi, I want to start making smaller batches, say 3 gallon as opposed to 5, so I can experiment a little more and not spend to much money on a flop brew. Now, I'm fairly certain I can use my 6th grade math to figure out quantity of ingredients, but my question was more about my primary...

    Lyle's Syrup for priming

Hi, I noticed in Palmer's book that Lyle's Golden Syrup can be used for priming when bottling. I've got an Amber Ale that I thougt I would try this with. Does anyone know how to treat it? Should I prepare my solution the way I normally do with dextrose, only replace with Lyle's? Any...

    Still fermenting

Hi, Brewed an extract w grain Amber Ale and used Liquid Yeast for the first time. It took almost 48 hours to start fermenting, but then had a solid 6 day ferment. The airlock was showing no action so I transferred to my secondary. 1 - I noticed there was still a foamy head in the priming...

    German pilsner

Hi, I want to tackle an Extract w Grain Pilsner this weekend. I know a real Pilsner should be all-grain, but I'm not quite built for that yet. I found this recipe: http://www.thbs.intas.net/PV%20German%20Pils.htm Thoughts? I also read in Palmer's book that water is a KEY element to a...
