Advice on cold crashing conical via glycol chiller

Ok, so first ferment in a Spike CF-10 & I think the cooling coil is icing up. Went (tried to at least) from 80ºF to 36ºF but stalled at around 48ºF. Penguin 1/3hp chiller, 60:40 water to glycol ratio set to 36ºF. Do I need to step it down in stages? Raise the reservoir temp? BTW this is with...

Auber Temp probe not being detected by EZ Boil

Hello. Title pretty much says it all-My EZ Boil controller gives me an "ORAL 932" error code with the probe installed. I've checked the connections & everything is tight & right (I've been using this system for over a year) but after yesterdays brew, it just keeps flashing the code. Is the probe...

    Corny keg "dead space" volume

Any idea what volume of liquid is contained in a standard 5 gal ball lock corny keg from the top line to the lid (or really to the in & out posts)? I o2 free transfer my beer through the liquid in, and over fill my kegs so that beer is literally flowing out of the PR. I'm thinking this lack of...

    Protein rest with flaked/raw wheat

I’ve read conflicting information regarding whether or not a protein rest is needed when using a large (over 40) percentage of flaked or raw wheat. What say you? Any input is appreciated !

    Adjusting pH of starters

Hello. Will dropping my pH7.2 filtered water/DME starters down to pH5.4 (or so) improve the health of the resultant yeast? I always decant the spent beer. Thanks

Lager yeast starter with wheat wort

On brew day, I'm always left with a sufficient quantity of wort to make a starter; either to revitalize a banked yeast or prep the next in line brew. I'm making a Wit soon, and next in line is a Vienna Lager. Will using the Wit wort for my Lager starter present any problems? I'll be double if...

    Ezboil error codes

Hello all! Running a 120v 2 pump RIMS Rocket system & have encountered a code on the EzBoil “932” flashing alternately with “Oral” I know the “Oral” code means the RTD probe is not connected, but in this case it is. Pumps work fine, but the RIMS Rocket won’t fire. Any ideas?

    Hockhurz mashing

Anyone ever do a Hochkurz step mash (via RIMS, not decoction or infusion) for a 2row Pale/IPA grain bill? I'd like a bit more malt complexity without adding additional crystal malt.

RIMS exit temp vs mash temp

OK, so this is just from a preliminary water test with my EZ Boil controller, but when I ran a recirculating trial (tap water in my Spike mash tun, to a chugger, through a RIMS Rocket, back to mash tun) the temp probe at the exit of the RIMS Rocket read 133ºF (my set point) but the water in the...

    Electric newbie needs educating: RIMS

Ok, I'm ready to take the leap to a RIMS system (still using NG for boil & likely strike/sparge water) but am not sure what I need to be purchasing. My eventual goal is to get a 110v RIMS Rocket, probably by June. In the mean time, I'd like to get started on my controller. The RIMS Rocket is 20A...

Any reason this hillbilly mash tun idea is a no go?

After years of using a cooler,I want to switch to a stainless mash tun. Rather than insulate the kettle, I'm thinking of incorporating a hot plate controlled by a Bayite BTC211 & recirculating via one of my Chugger pumps. I don't need to ramp up temp, just maintain. So, let me have it, what are...

    Back again with alkalinity/bicarbonate issues

In my last several attempts to reduce/eliminate alkalinity from the mash liquor, I've ended up with a much lower mash pH than predicted. (Ex: starting water pH 7.6, CaCO3 105ppm, attempting to lower to 70ppm. Bru'n Water says .8 ml 86% phosphoric for 5.3 gal. Mash pH target 5.43, actual reading...

    Zeroing out alkalinity

OK, so I'm brewing a cream ale & can easily drop the alkalinity to zero with a small amount of phosphoric acid. (Starting CaCO3=86) My question: what pH should the actual mash water reach? (starting @ 7.6) I trust Bru'nWater's numbers, but also have a decent pH meter & would prefer to measure &...

    Porter and alkalinity issues

Gravity too high after second sparge

The title pretty well sums it up. I mash in a Coleman Extreme cooler w a bazooka screen, consistently hit my numbers, but the final runnings are usually about 1.040. Single infusion, double sparge, crush @ .036. Any suggestions on how to keep the volume the same, but increase the efficiency?

    Immersion chiller sizing

Hello All. I was fortunate to pick up one of those Home Depot blowout copper coils for $16. It's 1/2"x50'. I make almost exclusively 5 gallon batches in a converted keg, and am wondering if I should just use the entire roll. The dimensions of More Beer's chiller are: 12" diameter x 11.5 to top...
