Saison 3 Weeks in Primary, Reading 1.03

Any thoughts on how best to 'swirl it up'? I don't want to use a big metal spoon or anything that could risk infection.. Is it okay to just kind of swirl the bucket side to side a bit? I've been fermenting 75-80. It may have gotten below 75 a few times during the first week, but it seemed to be...

Saison 3 Weeks in Primary, Reading 1.03

Hi All, This is my 6th batch, and I took a bit of a hiatus so I'm forgetting: Do I have to wait until my beer finishes to rack to secondary? I brewed a yummy (i hope) Farmhouse Saison 3 weeks ago using Saison yeast. The recipe states: "Take care with the Saison yeasts. They have a curious...

Hahah thanks all! This makes me want to switch to a glass primary so I can better watch the show ;)

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

I just brewed my 4th batch- An American Double IPA with Warrior, Simcoe and Cascade hops. It's been 36 hours and still no sign of activity in the air-lock. The brew is in a plastic bucket, so I can't see if anything is happening.. I'm half tempted to take off the lid so I can take a look...

Dry Hopping on a Whim and General Hop Storage

Thanks guys! And what about my idea to dry-hop my Pale Ale? Good or bad?

Dry Hopping on a Whim and General Hop Storage

Hoping you can help with some hops questions. Part A: Hop Storage: I have 1.75 ounces of nice whole-leaf Sterling Hops (7%AAU) stored in the bag they came, inside another ziplock bag in the fridge. They're leftover from my Whitey's Gone Fishin Pale Ale brew from last weekend. Is this the...

Just brewed my IPA. How long do I wait?

I just bottled my IPA. It was in primary for 8 days, secondary with dry hop for 13 days. Tasted great when I sampled it. Now the hard part will be waiting 2-3 more weeks while it carbonates :) From Bottling:

Boil to Beverage in 3 Weeks?

Okay, so the general concensus is that it can be done fast, but may be better to wait. I just bottled my first batch (an IPA) on Sunday, so I'm in no rush to bottle this one. I'm going to rack it to the recently freed up glass carboy for secondary and let it hang there for 2 weeks. I'll brew...

Boil to Beverage in 3 Weeks?

Hi All, My second batch ever has been in primary for just over a week- a slightly modified Whitey's Gone Fishin' Pale Ale, from Joy of Home Brewing. In Papazian's recipe, he says "Ferment and bottle or keg. You should be fishing and enjoying this pale ale in 3 weeks.." Three weeks? Really...

    Beginners Brewing Blog

@ThirdGen Great call on the auto siphon. I actually went out and bought one the very next day, and it is a true joy to use. We actually bottled that batch yesterday- I tasted it and it didnt seem off, luckily.

    Cloudy StarSan

Thanks! Thats a good point about not needing a full 5 gallons. Also realized I could have gotten this answer by searching.. Sorry!

    Cloudy StarSan

I bottled my first batch of beer yesterday (woohoo!) and used StarSan to sanitize used beer bottles that I have collected. Everything went fine, and I decided to save five gallons of StarSan in my glass carboy so that it will be ready when I rack my next batch of beer. However, the StarSan...

StarSan Foaming in the Air Lock

Wow. Thanks all for your replies. What a vibrant community there is here! @whutever - Excuse my ignorance.. "RO" Water = "Regular Old Water..?" @Nurmey - I've stumbed upon threads that assert that star-san can eat through or weaken plastic. I'm assuming your airlock is plastic like mine- has...

StarSan Foaming in the Air Lock

This is my second batch ever- Whitey’s Gone Fishin IPA from The Complete Joy of Home Brewing. I'm loving the brewing experience! I pitched the yeast about 20 hours ago, and its bubbling away. With this batch, I switched from a powdered sanitizer that required rinsing to starsan.. I was...
