Floating yeast islands on top of 34/70 lager

Yeah, I've seen this before. Just last weekend on a German Pils actually. Don't worry about it.

    HLT Options?

I'm a big fan of the cooler HLT (rather than any sort of bucket methods). You can drain the mash straight into the kettle and start it boiling right away.

    Cheap Copper at Home Depot

One 60' 1/2" ID left in Mt. Laurel, NJ for $35. The guy who helped me did a quadruple take (I counted) when he saw the price.

Brew stand for rectangular cooler MLT

What about using a cooler as a HLT, mounting the MLT above the kettle (so you can lauter directly into the kettle), and pump (or pour) sparge water up into the MLT? I'm about to go this route myself. Either way, you're going to need a temporary holding vessel. It just seems easier for it to hold...

    DIY Beer Line Cleaner

Put one of these together with this method the other night. Once I got some teflon tape on there, it worked great.

    My Belgian Golden Strong Recipe

I wait until fermentation is winding down to add the simple sugars. The yeast will be able to do their job better if you have them work on the more complex malt sugars first, then let them cruise through the simple stuff afterward.

I'm building a home bar with 4 draft lines, how can I chill my kegs?

I've done the mini-fridge thing except with a small upright freezer, and it's been a success. The compressor has to work more than normal, but it holds it's own. Just be sure to insulate well (I have 3 inches of foam for about an R15) and keep air circulating with a few fans. I actually...

    Water Filter Setup

Just an FYI to anyone wanting to build this part-for-part like the OP - the Gilmour water shutoff has been discontinued. A slightly different part has to be used.

how much should a co2 refill cost?

Interesting. Where at? Is this for a fill (not an exchange)?

    Add yeast to flat bottles?

This has happened with my big beers as well. For my RIS, I thought ahead and added in additional yeast at bottling. But for my quad, I brainfarted and just bottled. So after waiting it out for a few months, I just cracked each one open, sprinkled a little dry champagne yeast in each bottle...

    building a manifold

Yeah I should have put a warning with that. There's a lot of garbage you need to sift through to get to the actual information.

    Kegerator Chamber under bar

Thanks for the reply. Your build was definitely one I had looked at. The fridge option is a little scary, and you saying that a 4.4 cu ft is pushing the limits has me really favoring going with a temp controlled freezer, as that size is about the max I could fit. I found this guy which I'd...

    Kegerator Chamber under bar

After religiously studying the DIY forum for the past month or so, I'm ready to get started with my first big DIY. Having just moved from a small condo to a new house with a finished basement, I'm ready to start kegging and pimping out my man cave at the same time. After waffling back and...

Keezer Build: w/ Hang-over Collar for Tower

I'll be keeping my eye on this thread. Be sure to keep us up to date on how well it's doing. Nice work!

Keezer Build: w/ Hang-over Collar for Tower

This is fantastic. I've been searching for a build like this for some time, and lo and behold I see this today! My biggest concern is keeping the tower cool enough to prevent foamy pours. How are you accomplishing this?

Honey - Boil or not to boil?

I've nailed down a Honey Porter recipe and in my experience the best way to handle it is to dilute it with some water and bring it to 170° for 10 minutes then add it at flameout. If you're feeling bold go ahead and add it without having pasteurized it (though that seems a bit too risky for me)...

    Transition to PM brewing

Put me down for endorsing the 2G cooler method. I'm terrified of any DIY projects, yet I was able to put this together no problem for about $20. The exact parts list is even posted in the thread. Definitely look into it. I still do partial boils on my stove, but I'm just very wary of...

6 month secondary - repitch before bottling?

I've got a Russian Imperial Stout that's been in the secondary for about 6 months, and bottling day is coming up soon. The OG was 1.094 and it finished at about 1.026 (at last check). Is the yeast in there still viable? I've got way too much time invested in this beer only to have it be flat...

Ideas for a really RED ale?

I'm looking to brew a red ale with a nice malty background and I'm probably going to hop exclusively with Centennial. The thing I want to get perfect is the color, though. Has anyone had any success getting a really red color out of their beer? Roasted barley or black patent? I'll be doing a...
