    oxyclean vs pbw

They are def. pits, and they only appeared after i let the carboy soak upsidedown overnight in PBW. I was under the impression that this stuff wasnt supposed to harm plastic?

    oxyclean vs pbw

To bring up an old thread. Anyone had any issues with pitting in plastic when using PBW? The top of my better bottle is covered in tiny pits, and i have to believe its from soaking in PBW upsidedown overnight to try and remove the krausen gunk.

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

Some good points here. I did pick up some StarSan yesterday for the batch im doing tomorrow, so ill see how that goes. I did pull a sample again last night, as its been on the DH for 6 days at 38 degrees. Some of the diacetyl had dissapated, and some more hop aroma was coming threw. Im going to...

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

Everything I have read states that fermenting warm is what gets rid of Diacetyl, not promotes it. This is why Diacetyl is very common in lagers, not so much for ales.

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

Anyone else had experiexe with Dicatyle in Ales? I brewed a Bitter last summer, and it was an undrinkable buttery mess. I gotta believe its from infection, rather then a fermentation process. Im going to try StarSan on my batch this weekend, and start over with some fresh yeast. Hopefully i...

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

True, i did read somewhere that many breweries thing that more hop oils are extracted at warmer temps, I have never tried it. I guess typically i condition in the keg for about 2 weeks before sampling, and have a nice hop aroma. Ill give this one another sample on saturday, as it will have...

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

Ill pick up some starsan for the next batch. My last three batches have all been a bit 'off', even though i have been using the same process (1 step cleaner) for the past 30 batches or so.

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

The yeast was reused, but its a practice i do all the time, as well as many others. This was only the 3rd batch used for this yeast. This yeast was very healthy i would say, in that it took a 1076 down to 1006 in a week. I cant rule out contamination, but I have been using the same...

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

Would the warm ferm. temps be considered 'unhealthy'? I pitched 1056 from a starter, fermented strong from 1076 to 1006 in about 7 days. Ive had diacetyl in one other brew, but in that case it was MUCH stronger. I tried krausening like you suggest, to no avail. Had to dump it.

Huge Dry hop amount, but no aroma in IPA!

I brewed up a AG Fury clone about a month ago. It calls for about 7oz of DH. I dry hop in the keg, when i pulled a sample last night there was none of the piney/grapefruite aroma that is typical of this beer/hop combo. What i did get was a bit of buttery/butterscoth aroma, which im guessing is...

    Surly Furious clone

Im assuming everyone in this thread realizes you can download the EXACT recipe for Fury, as well as other Surly brews strait from the Northern Brewer website? Fun to look back at all the attemps at a 'clone' to see how close people got to the real recipe though.

    Types of Spruce Needles

White pine needles will work fine. Dont be afraid of the old growth needles either. Everything I had read before I made my first spruce beer last year said to NEVER use the old growth. After picking a bag full of the new growth tips, i boiled some and made a spruce tea of sorts. The flavor and...

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

Good points Above. I pass by 2 of the largest homebrew stores in the country twice a day, so I cant imagine ever buying bulk grain, as I have such easy access to grain and a mill(even w/ crappy efficiency). I guess maybe if you live a long way from a store it could be a good deal to buy bulk...

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

I always buy and mill my grain at Midwest, so no issue with any inconsistencies there. While you do save when buying in bulk, its still 45 bucks that would have to come out of my pocket at once. its a lot easier spending 12-15 bucks a batch on grain. Not always easy to convince my sig. other of...

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

Interesting. The only other thing I can figure it could be then would be the PH of my water, maybe its super hard and hurting my conversion? I have tried all sorts of different mash in volumes, tried double batch sparges, all have had very little effect on efficency. Ill have to grab some PH...

    LHBS Grain Crush & Efficiency

Same here. I always double crush my grains at Midwest, I have brewed 20+ batches AG, and have never got above 68%. Typically I get around 60-65%. I would like to find someone local w/ a mill to borrow it to see if efficiencies actually go up, rather then drop 125 bucks on something that wont...

New Glarus Moon Man Clone Help

Maybe Dan just likes me? Ive messaged him three times, and every time have received a fast and appropriate response. BA automatically purged the message from Dan that had the Black Wheat help! I should have printed it, but i do have the recipe at home, so i can throw it on here one of these nights.

New Glarus Moon Man Clone Help

Same Dan Carey. I messaged him on BA, and I had a response in a couple hrs. For my black wheat,He gave me much of the grain bill, and said to culture some yeast from a bottle of Dancin Man to get the authentic yeast strain they use. He didnt seem 'tight lipped' to me. Not as open as say, Surly...
