    SMaSH ale advice needed

Hi, for my birthday I received that Northern Brewer box of South African hops and I'd like to make a SMaSH ale to test out one of the varieties. I only have three ounces of this N1/69 hop to use and it's listed as 13.4% alpha acid. For malt I have ten pounds of Crisp Marris Otter. Could someone...

    Noo! I messed up

Well I just brewed my first all-grain 5 gallon batch two weeks ago. Everything went great, even managed to nail my starting gravity. Yesterday I began to cold crash the beer down from 68*. Right now it's around 60*. I came out and opened my freezer to take a look and found the jar full of vodka...

FT: Lone Pint Yellow Rose SMaSH IPA for NEIPA

I just bought some of Lone Pint's Yellow Rose SMaSH IPA with Mosaic hops and it's amazing. I'd love to compare it to Heady Topper and some of the famous NEIPAs out there like Trillium. Thanks! -Chris

Texas Anyone know where to get keggles around Houston area?

I'm interested in beginning to brew 10 gallon batches but can't afford a nice brewpot so I was looking at keggles. I'm in the North Houston area and was wondering if anyone knows where to get them and/or have them converted to a brewpot with a spot for a ball valve and a thermometer. Thanks a...

    DFH 120 minute IPA oxidized?

I found some DFH 120 min IPA back in March and bought two bottles. I love the 60 and 90 so I thought I'd like this but it was disgusting. It just tasted aweful and sort of vinegary and not at all like beer. The bottles say bottled in October of 09. Well I tried that first one in March and saved...

lager yeast in primary, ale in secondary?

I just brewed a lager with a starting gravity of 1.064 yesterday. I used a pack of 2035 in a 4 liter starter so that equals almost 3 packs I think. Well I just found out about the Mr. Malty calculator today and it's showing I should have made a starter that would equal 4.5 packs. How bad could...

Went to homebrew festival, horrible off-flavor everywhere!

I went to a homebrew festival and contest this weekend in Seabrook, TX and every single beer my friends and I tasted had an off flavor. Some were stronger than others but it was still noticeable. I've looked through the list of off-flavors in my how to brew book but I cant tell if it matches any...

Almost screwed up bottling my first batch!

Alright so i decided to bottle my first beer today. Well I calculated how much sugar I would need, wrote it down, took a gravity reading, wrote it down, sanitized everything, and then transferred my beer to the bottling bucket. Well I began bottling my first beer when all sudden I realized I...

Did I make a starter wrong or does this beer not contain viable yeast?

I tried to make a starter from the sediment left in a Bud Light Golden Wheat bottle 3 days ago because it says it's unfiltered on the bottle. I boiled 12oz water with around 3 tablespoons of wheat LME and added .25oz hop pellets. I know I put way too many hops in there, they kinda fell out of...

Conversion for rice syrup to rice syrup solids

I have BeerSmith v1.3 and it doesn't have rice syrup solids, just rice syrup. Is there a conversion factor so I know how much powder to use according to my beersmith recipe or will I just have to guess? I know with DME to LME, you add 20% but I have no idea for this.

Pacman vs Wyeast 1056 american ale

I've heard great things about Pacman fermenting at 60* but I'll be fermenting at 70*. I have both yeasts on hand and am wondering which yeast will give a drier less fruity taste in an american ale that is fermented at 70*. Thanks -Chris

i thought all IPA's were disgusting until...

I always thought ipa's were disgusting because of that horrible burning aftertaste somewhat like a grapefruit but stronger and I'd never had a "light" one. Then again I've only tried Abita ipa, my friends homebrew ipa, and one otheron tap that I can't remember its name. BUT yesterday I bought a...

    psuedo lager yeast

I know kolsch yeast is very good for this but what about wyeast's pacman? Its got low to no diacetyl, medium to high flocculation, temp between 60-72*f, & very mild fruit to it. What do you think? I'm planning on making a psuedo pilsner with fermentation at room temp. Thanks

Brewed my first batch last night!

Well I brewed my first beer last night and I definitely learned quite a bit in the process. I used How to Brew by Palmer and Radical Brewing by Mosher to learn about brewing and got all my ingredients and equipment on Thursday and did the brew last night. I made a wheat beer, it's not specific...

Fermenting mead in 6 weeks or less, does this really work?

I'm a complete newbie to homebrewing, in fact my equipment kit hasn't even arrived yet, but I was reading The Complete Joy of Home Brewing by Papazian and I saw in the mead section in the back that he talks about the importance of adding nutrients for healthy yeast fermentation. He says "Without...

    Hello from Huntsville, TX

I'm brand new to the homebrewing world. My roommate bought a kit from Midwestern on eBay and finished his first batch about a month ago. It came out really good, but too dark and hoppy for me. Well for his second batch, he decided to make mead which is in the second fermenter right now and he's...
