    Something new from Sam Adams?

I was at the beer store today and noticed some new offerings from Sam Adams. I picked up a bomber of Tasman Red IPA, The Vixen chocolate chili bock, and Griffin's Bow blonde barley wine. There was also a double IPA but I passed on that. I didn't even know these beers were out until I saw them on...

    Southern Tier 2xIPA

Just trying this today. Absolutely awesome!!! They pulled off a great DIPA without cloying sweetness that is all too common. This beer is a new favorite for me. Rather than just cranking up the volume of their IPA on all levels, they finessed it to make a very well balanced big beer. Well done.

Cigar City Jai Alai White Oak Aged IPA

Just showed up in my local beer store. Wow, what a great beer. I lack the vernacular to give it a "pro" review but the difference between the oaked Jai Alai and the regular is profound. The vanilla flavors from the oak really round out the body and balance (bridge?) the hoppiness. I'm going to...

Any ideas on a Boulder Brewing Cold Hop clone?

I was thoroughly enjoying a six pack of this beer over the weekend. The label calls it a "British Stlye Ale". To me it seems to capture some of the best features of both British and American styles. Does anyone have and recipe ideas for a partial mash approximation of this beer?

    No-chill question

I read the whole no-chill thread but still had a question I'm not sure was addressed (thread too big to re-read). I understand the timing changes to hop additions, but couldn't the entire boil time be shortened instead? Or should a 60 min boil remain a 60 min boil with no hops for the first...

Making yogurt cheese in grain bag?

I'm making some yogurt cheese (I know, not really cheese) today and had the thought of straining it through a grain bag instead of cheese cloth. I just paid $3 at the grocery for enough cheese cloth to do one batch of yogurt cheese. If a grain bag works, it would be reusable and save me some...

Excess of crystal malt - need ideas

Without going into details, I find myself with an excess of milled crystal malt on hand. At first I wasn't worried, but then read milled malts are only good for a couple weeks, so I need some ideas to use the malt. I do steeped grain and partial mashes in my brewing - AG is not an option at...

Can I ferment in plastic juice bottle?

I have some 1 gallon glass jugs (Whole Foods cider jugs) I've been doing test batches in. Today I was looking at the Kirkland (Costco) plastic apple jug and was wondering if I could ferment in that. On the bottom there are two recycling triangles. One has the number 5 in it and reads "PP...

    Newbie Cider Mistake

I put up a one gallon jug three days ago. Today I realized I forgot the yeast nutrient so I added it a few minutes ago. Freakin' geyser - cider everywhere - sticky kitchen blues. I'm not a stupid man - why do I do things like this? I should have known after the 2 week old jug went nuts when I...

    Scented Oxy-Clean OK on glass?

I've been using the Oxy Free for all my cleaning needs but was wondering if I could use the scented to clean glass bottles (with a good rinse of course) and save the Free for plastics. I get the scented pretty cheap at Costco in the 15 lb box but the Free is more pricey. Just trying to shave a...

    Problem with my Tap-A-Draft?

Just got a TAD and am using it for the first time. I primed and carbed the beer normally. I hooked up the tap and let sit in the fridge overnight. Next day we started drinking it, and all was well at first. But after a couple hours, pressure dropped and I had to add another CO2 cartridge. Later...

    Getting back into brewing.

I got into brewing when I was in college (about 15 years ago). I brewed many a batch in a crappy one bedroom apartment. I stopped brewing when I got married, but now that the currents of life have left me single again, I decided to start brewing again. Much has changed. A lot of it is for the...
