    Can't get temp down

Thanks for the help. I used coopers dry ale yeast because I heard it is better at higher temps. I googled coopers yeast and found that the temp range is 65-75. I also threw a few blankets around my cardboard box that was covering both my fermenter and an A/C vent and I got the temp down to...

    Can't get temp down

I just brewed an IPA yesterday. I just moved to the south. my old house had a basement that kept good brewing temps so I didn't have these problems before. I tried the wet towel and fan, a cardboard box over the fermenter and and A/C vent, and I can only maintain 72-74 degrees. Will this...

    What Is Possible

You can pick up the book, "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, Charlie Pappazian." This has recipes and also some great instruction. It is broken down into 3 sections, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. He goes into detail on picking your own ingredients that include using dry malt extracts...

    FlyGuy's T-siphon: a $3 replacement for an autosiphon

You can also start your siphon by filling up the T-section with sanitized water, pinching off the new vessel hose to create a vacuum, and letting the water run out. (Assuming your T-line is longer than 2x the length of your carboy)

    broken hydrometer :(

yeah. from liquid to a solid for storage and back to a liquid again for the test. All changes occured within a closed system. I probably didn't need to go that far though, but this is a completely reversible process without losses so shouldn't affect anything.

    broken hydrometer :(

Hydrometer finally came in today. Thawed my sample and checked it. It came out to be 1.050 at 60 degrees. Since this is my first try at brewing, I want to play with all the fun scientific tests that go with it. It's 0.004 higher than the recipe calls for but I guess that means more ABV at...

    gravity question

Hey bro...I am new to brewing, but have a scientific background. you may want to check out this post and then ask again, but temperature, pressure, and your added unsweetened ingredients may have contributed to the difference. I wouldn't worry about it. your brew is still going to ferment and...

    First brew day in pictures.....

Thats a beautiful color brew. I just finished my first ever batch today with a midwest american ale and it looked really dark. I also had some trouble filtering out my hops between the wort and the fermenter, but other posts say there is nothing to worry about. We should be tasting our first...

Cost vs. Labor - Before I do anything!

As Mark Twain said when Tom Sawyer got all his friends to white wash the fence, "Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do. Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do." You can save considerable money if you belive that brewing is play and not work.

    broken hydrometer :(

Thanks for the feedback. I am freezing the sample because I thought that a sealed frozen sample would be less susceptible to physical property changes than just a sealed refrigerated sample would be. I am sure that my replacement will be here in about a week. thanks

    broken hydrometer :(

I just finished brewing my first batch today. When I went to grab my hydrometer that came with the kit, i saw that it was broken. I poured a few ounces of 72 degree wort into a platstic bowl with a lid and placed it in the freezer before i pitched my yeast into the fermenter. I just ordered...
