Fat Tire - New Belgium ditches classic recipe

I just found out last night that the Fat Tire recipe has been switched out for something almost completely different (beginning last month -Jan.). I just got a few 6packs of the old stuff recently after not having one in many years, and really enjoyed it, and was thinking I'm glad they at least...

    Which way to java?

I have a black IPA dry hopping and will bottle within the next two days. What's the deal with adding the grounds to secondary? I've read how people put them in there for a whole week - but since it only takes about 24 hours to cold brew coffee, couldn't i get away with putting them in there...

    Moosehead Lager, bringing it back...

I had my first Moosehead Lager in roughly 10 years last night (?!). My friends and I discovered this beer early on in a our craft beer quest (before we knew exactly what craft beer was, we just knew we wanted better and better beer...). This was before I ever had an IPA, to give some context...

    Pyramid Oktoberfest...not liking

Who's tried this? I'm drinking one now... at 6.7% i find it unnecessarily heavy...it's sweet but the flavor is kind of dank and lost...i don't think i'm gonna finish it

Pilsner, overnight, went from nasty to awesome

My first lager. Last night it tasted and reeked of diacetyl and I was lamenting having over 4 gallons of this stuff. Tonight, crossing my fingers hoping it improved even slightly, it's now in the realm of the legitimate (czech) pilsners that I love. Whaaaaat? My theory: the nasty stuff settled...

Wyeast 1332 (Northwest Ale) - should be retired

I just want to express my recently acquired disdain for this yeast. I will never use it again. I used it in 2 different beers over the last 6 months - a blonde and an APA. It imparts a harsh tartness to the beer, and it gets worse as the beer ages. I do have a new-found appreciation for 1056.

    Will gelatin impact the flavor?

I brewed a "palesner" (pilsner with a kolsch yeast), it's in the keg in the fridge, lagering. It's delicious, but it's very cloudy (used a pound of german wheat malt) - i like the idea of a cloudy, unfiltered lager, but if i decided to try to clear it up, would the gelatin make some of the...

    Oak-aged Red Rocket Clone?

Hey people, I'm brewing a Red Rocket clone (Jamil's). Since it's a hoppy beer - does this benefit from aging or should it be consumed on the fresh side of things? And I'm thinking it would yield to some oak aging quite nicely - any thoughts?

Anchor Summer Beer for 2011 - not as good as last year?

Maybe my senses have changed over the last year, but I remember this beer being considerably better than this. It's not bad, but last year I was pretty impressed - not this year. Anyone else make the comparison?

    Am I missing an o-ring?

On a ball lock keg, on the gas inlet side - is there suppose to be an o-ring where the spring/piston thing is? basically, holding the assembly upside down, the three prongs of the spring unit meet at a notch (top of threading), where it looks like an o-ring might go... I'm a noob - sorry...

New to kegging, forced into it because of friends' wedding - need some advice

Here's the thing, my friends asked me to brew beer for their wedding, so I'll be kegging three 5-gallon batches soon (figured it's way easier to travel with 3 kegs rather than 150 bottles). Obviously due to the nature of the event, my margin for error is very narrow. I don't own a kegerator...

Drinking a Sierra Nevada Summerfest 2011...

I have to say, I love this beer - clean, and great malt-hop counterpoint, classic aroma. The key is to get it now...the chances of getting an "off" six-pack increase as the season goes on (mishandling, summer heat...)... http://www.sierranevada.com/beers/summerfest.html

    Is this "flaked" rice??

Hey peeps - got my order from Austin Homebrew today. Part of my order was for 2.5# of flaked rice. This doesn't look like what I was expecting, and I called them and they said they only have one kind of rice - the flaked kind that you mash. But I'm still not totally convinced what I got is...

Toasted Rice - have any stories?

First time using rice here. I know rice (flakes) adds practically no flavor to a beer - however, does it (not toasted) add any flavor to a light grain bill? (5-gallon) 7lbs. two-row, 2.5 lbs rice, 1/2 lb. flaked wheat. I couldn't find any good discussion about this on this forum. Would...

Gravity reading after bottling is in another league compared to FG at bottling...

So I brewed up a Saison late last summer. The FG (or so I thought) was 1.007 at bottling, but I just opened a bottle earlier tonight and took a gravity reading (an excuse to use my refractometer) and was astounded to find the reading over 1.020. I used a hydrometer for the FG at bottling, and I...

Red Tail Ale - why do you like it???

I had Red Tail Ale from Mendocino a few weeks ago, had a few left over so I tried one again. I really don't like it. What's all the rave about? Did I get a bad batch?

Quick! what should I do?...yeast pouch expansion alert

I just got an order today, and the yeast I'm using is the Wyeast 3724 (saison). The small pouch containing the yeast inside the smack pack has expanded (to the max it seems), but hasn't been "smacked" yet. What should I do? I'm not planning on brewing until tomorrow. It's now in the fridge -...

    Worst beer I've ever had...

Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat. Tried it about two years ago, couldn't even finish the bottle, which is kind of rare for me. And it wasn't skunked. My friend described it..."take bud light, throw in some fruit loops, and strain it out"...there's your sunset wheat. Everyone thought it was...

    Beer from Grape Nuts

Hey, has anyone ever actually made beer from Grape Nuts (or store brand equivalent)? How different would it be from using malted grains? :fro:
