    Morning Glories

I had a wild morning glory vine join one of my hop plants this summer. It looks very nice, but my question is can I grow both next year for looks without undo stress on the hops. It doesn't appear to have affected the hops this season. Thanks for the advice, Barry

    Over Priming bottles

Three changes this year. 1) Beersmith I upgraded and found a bug calculating priming sugar which calculated sugar based on anticipated volume not true volume. Adjusted for that by switching to the manual tool. 2) Starters raised to 2 quarts from Wyeast Activators as opposed to 1 pt - 1 qt...

Fridge top as a stir plate

It occurred to me that the top of my fridge (Outside) is almost constantly vibrating and warm. Where would that stand in the stir plate technology? I am thinking that it would get results better intermittent shaking but less effective than using a stir plate. Maybe split the difference...

    Malt O Meal as adjnct

Does anyone know the percentage of Wheat to Barley in Malto meal. I want to use it as an adjunct like corn grits, but am wondering how dominate the wheat will be. The ingredient list Wheat/farina 1st and Malted barley second. I searched and found references to it, but nothing on its make...

    It WAS a beatiful thing

I have 12 varieties planted to see what likes the MN weather. My Centennial (1st year) put up 1 shoot, it withered and I have seen no more shoots emerging. Thinking it's a goner. My Liberty tried to return from it's winter slumber, but with a little help from a critter (most likely a squirrel)...

What is eating my Liberty Hops

Second year in a row, my Liberty shoots are being dug up. Whatever it is ignores the Glacier and Horizon, but has been very busy trying to eat Liberty. Any ideas? Squirrels, rabbits common in the area THanks, Barry

    Keeping Hops from spreading

I searched around, but didn't find anything yet. I am planting more hops this spring, but do not want them to spread. Has anyone planted them in a container such as a buried coffee can? I'm thinking of either that or a five gallon plastic bucket with holes drilled in the bottom and a layer...

    Storing Sterilized bottles

What do the biology/lab gurus think of this? ;) If I sterilize bottles in my oven and allow them to cool in the oven (oven closed), then cap them with caps that have been soaked in 1 step, would they maintain their sterility until I opened them again? Alternatively, if I loosely covered...

    Partial Mash Water Chemistry

When doing a partial mash, partial boil (3 gallons), Should I treat all of the water, or just the water used to mash and sparge. I am doing a light lager that requires me to use a lot of distilled water to get my water chemistry down. I usually use about 2 gallons to dilute the boil. I am...

    Bottle vs Carboy aging

I want to free up a carboy, yet am aging a batch at basement temp. @ 60. Would like it cooler, but don't have a fridge to use. Any thoughts on bottling the batch and letting it age that way? Wine makes a difference when aged in bulk, how about beer? Thanks, Barry

Late addition extract calcs with Promash

Does this procedure make sense when adjusting IBUs on a late addition extract boil? Since the extract is added in the last 15 minutes, it will have no effect on the bittering hops. Therefore the IBU values calculated by Promash are too low. If after the batch OG is set, Changing the SG...

    Lauter Tun question

I saw a drawing of a lauter tun in Noonan's "New Lager Brewing" today. There was a pipe running down under the false bottom. There was not a sparge arm. The text described adding sparge water to this pipe. There didn't appear to be any holes at the top portion. Later a second drawing...

    Bittering hops question

If all of the aroma and flavor are boiled out of the hops when boiled for 60 minutes, why have I found a couple of recipes that call for additions of separate hop types with the same (or similar) AA values at the same time. All I have been able to ascertain is that bittering hops are used for...
