    Wyeast 4021 Pasteur Champagne Attenuation

I have a 1.092 braggot recipe that I was planning to pitch on some measured amount of a 3787 yeast cake. I also have some of this 4021 champagne yeast on hand. http://www.wyeastlab.com/rw_yeaststrain_detail.cfm?ID=38 says "NA" for the attenuation %. My brewing software (Brewtarget)...

    is this powdery mildew?

I have been looking at different threads and also found this: http://www.uvm.edu/extension/cropsoil/wp-content/uploads/PowderyMildew.pdf. It doesn't seem to look exactly the same though. Is this likely to be mildew? Or something else? Underside of some leaves: On the actual bines:

Any issues with refilling a partially full keg?

I have a 5g batch of beer that's done fermenting in the carboy. Tomorrow we're hosting a picnic and I have a 2.5g keg that's empty. I thought it might be nice to keg it and add to the variety of stuff available for our guests. Obviously I can only put half the batch in to this smaller keg, so...

    bug id

Anyone know what this is? I see them pretty regularly hanging out on the hops and am not sure if they're good guys cleaning up bad guys or if they're the culprits that are munching holes in my leaves.

    Is my twine sturdy enough?

I got this Vigoro 200 ft soft garden twine initially but am thinking of replacing it with some 1/4" sisal instead. Am I just being paranoid or is it likely the soft twine won't survive the season?

American Amber recipe - feedback please

I had Anderson Valley's Boont Amber the other day and liked it quite a bit. That got me wanting to brew up an amber ale. I found https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/can-you-brew-recipe-anderson-valley-boont-amber-239390/ but wanted to modify it to make use of some things I've had laying around a...

unsealed hops bags left out all night - still good?

I brewed yesterday, and at the end of the night I set the leftover hops on the counter and forgot about them. Still worth vacuum sealing them up for later use or do you think they're too oxidized now?

Hi all, I'm looking for advice on where to start. I've been doing full boil AG batches in my apartment kitchen for a few years now but we're finally moving into a house!! :rockin: I've never really had the option to brew outside before but the house has a nice back porch and the new kitchen...

Help with Bear Republic Heritage Ale clone

Tried this at the bar this weekend and was impressed. I looked around the forums and the web in general and didn't see any clone recipes posted. Here is the description from their web site: I've got most of what I need from that, but I'm not sure what to go with for the grain bill. I've...

    Check your barley crusher's gap!

I've been fighting efficiency issues ever since starting AG brewing. I had carefully followed the advice of Denny and Bobby and many of the other regulars here on HBT but was still just barely managing 65-70% on my beers. I'd bought a grain mill and hoped that would finally solve my problem...

    ph meter feedback

has anyone bought this ph meter? Waterproof pH Meter / Thermometer If so, what are your thoughts on it? It says it includes Buffer Solutions pH4.0, pH7.0, and pH10.0. Would I need anything else to go with it? Last but not least, are there any good guides for how best to make use of...

    importance of mash temperature?

Ok, I've done several AG batches now. I tried BIAB with decent success but grew tired of holding heavy bags of grain and so I bought a bazooka screen that fit into my 10g kettle to use it for batch sparging. The first time I used this I quickly realized that maintaining the mash temp for an...

dry hop with columbus or amarillo?

Here's the recipe: http://hopville.com/recipe/328956/belgian-dubbel-recipes/hoppy-belgian-dubbel It's basically a Chimay clone in terms of the grain profile, but then I just ignored the normal hops additions and threw a ton of amarillo and columbus in there instead. I was debating changing...

Questions about mashing with false bottoms

So I'm starting to do some AG batches but have several questions. The goal here is simply to make good AG beer without a major hassle on brew day and without doing a lot of DIY construction labor (I live in a small apartment, have very few tools, am lazy, etc). From slowly upgrading things...

ever tried culturing ommegang dubbel yeast?

So I picked up a 4 pack the other day of some Ommegang Belgian Abbey Dubbel. Has anyone tried culturing yeast from this beer before? And if so, any comments about how well it works and how the flavors come out? I have ingredients to brew a belgian IPA and am shooting for something similar...

    problems drying out a saison

I brewed the following Saison recipe from AHA's Big Brew 2009: http://wiki.homebrewersassociation.org/SaisonDuMont-Extract It seems even in the recipe they knew it might get stuck at a higher gravity than preferred with the belgian yeast. Here's what it says about the yeast choice in the...

    BIAB partial mash efficiency question

I gave partial mashing a try via the brew-in-a-bag method recently. I had 1 gallon of water in my smaller kettle for the mash and then 5 gallons in my main kettle at 170. After letting the grains sit for an hour at ~150 I took the bag and let it drip into the small kettle. Then I took it...

    real quick yeast washing question

Here's my carboy about 10 minutes after adding the water and swirling: The wiki says to not carry anything dark that separates out. Is that layer of stuff at the bottom all sediment that I should leave behind? I was expecting a layer of darker crud looking stuff, a lighter layer of...
