    Hops in Primary fermentation?

I brewed my first lager 2 weeks ago. When I chilled my wort and poured it into my primary fermentator, I did not strain out the hops (I never have for that matter) and left it in the primary. I checked the gravity at day 12 and it was finished with fermentation and was a nice light color and...

    Saflager S-23

I brewed my first lager last Saturday afternoon, an American Lite (for SWMBO). I had an OG of 1.045, cooled to wort to 59 deg F., and pitched the S-23 yeast. I had activity in the airlock withing 24 hours. I checked the lagerator yesterday (Thursday) afternoon and I have no airlock activity...

    Values for malts, hops, yeasts?

I recently purchased BeerSmith and am trying to enter some of my old and new recipies. Many of the malts that I use are not in their lists but I see that I can add new ones. Where do I get the color (SRM) and yield potential for these malts? I will need to get info on yeasts, rice syrup...

    Starter?

I've never done a starter, just added dry yeast to wort and let her go. I purchased a 1000 ml flask and some dry malt with an airlock. The instructions that came with the kit all use smack packs or liquid yeast to make the starter. I have dry packets. How do I make a starter with dry yeast?

Two stage cold fermentation - Lagers

I plan to brew my first lager (bock - extract kit) this weekend and I'm not exactly sure what the "2 stage cold fermentation" procedures are. I have an old refridgerator with a temp control so cold temperatures are not a problem. My questions: 1) Do I do my primary at regular temps...

    2-stage cold fermentation?

Up to this date, all I've ever brewed has been ales. I'm considering lagers and am unfamiliar with it's fermentation processes. Can anyone point me toward a link for instructions for 2-stage cold fermentation? :mug:

    OOPS! Frozen Kegs!

We recently had some -10 deg F weather here. My kegerator is in an unheated, unattached garage. I dug through the snow today and tried to draw a beer. It seems that my kegs froze in the kegerator. Will this effect my beer?

I've finally learned that you don't need to worry!

I brewed an Irish Red two weeks ago. I cooled the wort and pitched the yeast and put it in the brew closet. It took 3 days for any activity to show up in the airlock and it never did get very vigorous. The krausen was small compared to previous brews and it bubbled for a full two weeks...

    Burp!

I have a real problem with my Kirk's porter! I drank it too fast. When I started this hobby, all I ever drank were light colored beers. This is the best kit I've brewed to date plus my first use of kegs. I love the roasted malt flavors.

    Oxy Clean?

I'm going to move my Kolsch to the 2ndary this weekend and find that I'm out of PBW cleaner. What will happen if I use Oxy Clean followed by StarSan? I cleaned my secondary well before putting it in storage.

    Priming sugar?

I have three 5 oz. bags of priming sugar that I've accumulated over the last few years of brewing. I now keg and don't need to prime anymore (unless I decide to prime in keg). What would happen to an extract beer if I were to add the priming sugar to the initial boil? What will it do to...

First time kegging, I need help!!!

I dis-assembled my corney keg to clean and sanitize prior to racking my porter. When I put it back together, I hooked up the hoses and pressurized the keg and aggitated the PBW solution. I mistakenly reversed the keg's gas tube and the liquid out tubes. Also, I didn't pay attention to where...

    Racking problem!

When I was racking from primary to 2ndary, my racking cane came out of the wort for a second or so and I developed an air pocket in the tubing. Will this be a cause for concern with respect to oxidation?

    Digital Temp Control Questions

I've purchased an used refridgerator, corny kegs, CO2 system, hoses and two perlick kits. I also invested in a Johnson temperature control. Do you run the temp sensor cord under the weatherstrip on the door or do you need to drill a hole throught the side and insert it that way? I'm...

    Keg pressures?

I'm going to move my porter from the primary to the 2ndary this week end so I thought I's get some questions answered before I keg.. This is my first attempt at kegging and I have questions concerning CO2 pressures: 1) Beer Smith said that at 34 deg F, I should use approx. 8 1/2 PSI on the...

    Beer Smith Question?

I just completed brewing a porter. It was an extract kit with 8 oz. of crystal and 8 oz. of black patent malt grains that I steeped at 155 F for 30 minutes. When I was entering the recipe on Beer Smith, I'm confused as to how I enter these grains. Is it considered a partial mash or do I...

    Wine from red beets???

I recently heard that it was possible to make wine from the juice that was created when boiling red beets to make pickles. Has anybody heard of this and if so, do you have a recipe? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Removing an unusual cornelius "gas-in" post.

I'm getting ready to do my first kegging and I'm working to recondition some old cornys. I have watched a youtube video on kegging and it showed removal of "in" and "out" ball lock assembly posts and tubes from the keg, to sainitize them. Removal was facilitated using either a 7/16" or 9/16"...

How long does a CO2 cylinder last?

I am preparing my shopping list for equipment so I can switch to kegging. (I'm tired of washing bottles!!!!) What size CO2 bottle does everybody recommend? How long does a 5# bottle typically last with one or two kegs? Sorry about so many questions, but I don't want to but a 5# and find...

I'm Back and Brewing in Nebraska

I haven't brewed a batch of beer for almost a year! I finally went to my brew store in Lincoln and purchased another Bock kit to go along with my Irish Red I've had for a while. I plan to brew the red this weekend. I've also got a line on some kegs so I will be throwing away all my beer...
