    Any Canadians??

Sure, but I'm still pretty clueless at this point :) I think I can make it work by insulating the pot, but we'll see how it goes. I also expect to get a propane burner sooner or later, but I'd rather stay inside during winter. I guess it's a matter of weighing slower boils against winter...

    Any Canadians??

That reminds me of when I was in Reykjavik in 1971. Everyone wanted to practice their English on me, and one guy asked, "You're from Canada? Do you know Frank Zappa?" Well, it was funny at the time :p

    Any Canadians??

I have an old-school electric stove. I figure that with insulation and possibly a supplementary 1500W heat stick, I'll be able to control boils well enough. There are stainless pots on that page further down, but they don't have the right size. (Wouldn't 27-qt be a bit too small for 5-gal...

    Any Canadians??

Today I joined facebook just to hook up with SOB and get in on some purchases in the future. I'm just starting out, though, and it may be another week or two before I brew my first batch. (Probably an APA with extract.) I've checked out Brew Time already, and I'll get my supplies there at...

    Any Canadians??

I thought my google-fu was pretty good, but there are southern ontario grain suppliers listed here that I couldn't find online. Thanks, guys :) BTW, I'm in Hamilton.

That looks doable. Thanks for the link :)

    U-brew shortcuts

Hmm, now I've been reading this, and if I can brew on my electric stove, then I'll go with 5-gal batches from the start. The appealing thing about 2.5-gal was mostly that I could do it on my stove. I'm willing to get a restaurant-quality stockpot from here ... I'd just have to decide on which...

That's actually what I'm debating right now. Can I leave 2.5-gal of wort in a 6-gal carboy for 21 days? Once the fermentation stops, won't the large surface area on top invite oxidization? I'm going on Tuesday to buy the gear, so I have until then to figure it out. I don't mind buying a...

    hello from Hamilton ON

Welcome. I'm also in Hamilton. I haven't actually brewed anything yet, but I'm working on it :)

I ran across the Brew House website a little while back, and their kits do look pretty good. I'm tempted to start with some 2.5-gal extract batches, though, since I'm dying to try out some of the recipes here :)

Is this an appropriate beginner pot?

I've been thinking a lot about brewing equipment myself, and at the moment I'm inclined to go with 2.5-gal batches that I can manage easily on my electric stove -- especially in the winter when I don't want to do anything outside. (In the summer, I think 5-gal batches in a turkey fryer might be...

    U-brew shortcuts

I should have asked this question in the original post, but what do I do now? I have the beer in the laundry room, which is cooler at this time of year. Would it be better to age it a bit in the warmer part of the house? Is there enough yeast left to accomplish any conditioning? I'd think...

That's exactly my plan. Thanks. That's what I thought :) I do like Heineken, though it's far from my favorite beer. The bitterness and lack of finish to the ubrew clone was nothing like the real Heineken.

So do homebrewers ever filter their beer? I was thinking that the ubrew spoiled my beer not only by rushing it but by filtering it. Could it still improve in the bottle even if it was filtered?

I won't be starting bare-bones, but I don't plan anything too fancy for my starting gear. A couple BB carboys instead of pails, maybe. I found a list of 10 easy-to-brew beers and decided to try an APA first. Well, I want to save money on good beer, but I also want to master the art of making...

That cost around $100 CAD before the bottles I bought. But remember that beer is expensive in Canada, it was actually a savings.

Just to see what's involved in brewing beer, I did a 10-gallon batch (Heineken clone) on-premises at my LHBS. It was interesting on brew day: they used a malt extract and added the hops in pellet form. Two weeks later, it's done, or so they say. It's the right color, it's clear, it's...

The labels on my Guiness Draught bottles from the LCBO say "Brewed in Ireland."

    Beer 101

I like Tsingtao a lot. I wouldn't mind brewing one like that. I drank Japanese beer in Japan, and I thought it was pretty good. Some of the UK beers I've had lately were very nice: Caledonian 80/- and Newcastle in cans, and Guiness Draft in bottles. These were all brewed in the UK. I've...

    Beer 101

Thanks for the recommendations. The Pilsner Urquell I'm very familiar with. I have to admit that the research I've been doing on beer has been very pleasurable so far :) Hamilton.
