    BJCP Tasting Dilemma

I am going to be taking the BJCP Tasting exam this weekend. I am very excited and studying diligently. But because the gods have a cruel sense of humor, they have given me one hell of a cold. I am so congested that I can barely smell or taste. Anyone have any suggestions on how i can clear my...

    Diffusion Stones falling apart

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but my diffusion stones keep coming apart on me. Has anyone figured out a way to re-attach the stone to the flare nut, so it stays together? I have gone through 3 stones now.

For those of you in the Denver area. Prost Brewing had their Grand Opening last night. This place is definitely worth checking out. The focus of the brewery is solely German beers. It is head up by Bill Eye who was the Brew Master at Dry Dock Brewing. If you like German Lager this place will...

    Why Naturally Carb in Keg?

I have always force carbonated my beer, but I know some people prefer to naturally carbonate in the keg. Can someone tell me the reason why? Is there a flavor difference or reason that I am not aware of?

    Longer Boil Times?

One question I have never gotten a true answer to, is why do you see recipes that ask for longer boil times such as 90 and 120 min etc. I understand the need for a longer boil when using pilsen malt to avoid dms. I also can understand for more involved hop schedules. But that is not the case...

    Slicing the Bottom of Keggles

I was speaking with a fellow homebrewer the other day. He mentioned to me that it is really important to slice cuts in the bottom edge of the keggles when using a direct fire system, so oxygen can get to the burners. I have never heard of such a thing and don't have these on my keggles. Is...

    Sour Mash Temp Control

I am interested in doing a sour mash, but having some challenges in figuring out how to control the mash temp. I understand that for best results you need to hold the temp around 120 for a few days. Has anyone had any luck with this? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Using Dates in Beer

I started thinking of a new beer today. I was wondering if any of you have tried putting dates into a beer. If so, how did it come out.

    Question about ABV in contests

I have just brewed a Belgian Dark Strong Ale, but the ABV is coming in at 8.38% which is on the low side of the style. (This was due to really poor efficiency because of the grind I got.) Anyway, from the samples I took, it tastes fantastic. Is ABV for the style something that is ever...

    Bjcp exam

I just signed up for a prep class for the BJCP exam that starts next week. I am not taking the test until next November 2011. Already I am feeling overwhelmed. It is amazing how much there is to learn.

Moving Undercarbed Beer from Bottle to Keg

I have a question I was hoping I could get some help on. I had made a stout a couple of months ago that I naturally bottle carbed. Evidently I went a little too light on the corn sugar as it is really under carbed. Is it possible for me to dump all of the bottles in a keg and force carb even...

    Strange Food or Drink Combinations.

I was talking with some friends about some of the weird foods and/or drinks that we like. I am curious what strange combination's other like to eat or drink. You know the things that people are always telling you are disgusting, and I can't believe you eat that. I for one love to drink pickle...

    My first kegged beer

I just recently bought all of the stuff to start kegging. and after patiently waiting for my beer to be ready and then to keg and carb properly (I am doing the sit and wait method). I was finally able to tap my first keg and I couldn't be more happy. It is a spiced Pumpkin Ale and absolutely...

Only Thing Worse than Bad Head

...Is No Head at All I recently brewed Ó Flannagáin's Standard Stout recipe and I can't figure out where I went wrong. it tastes fantastic but has absolutely no head. To answer some of the more obvious questions, it was bottle conditioned and has been in the bottle for 4 weeks. The...

    Very Drunk Thank You

I have definitely had a few too many tonight, so please bare with me. I spent some time at a local Brew Pub tonight and I keep thinking (in my extremely intoxicated way) about how much I appreciate what I have learned from the folks at HBT and my local beer scene. Prior to home-brewing, I...

What is a good price for used 5lb CO2 tank

I am just looking to get into kegging and am trying to buy a used 5lb CO2 tank on Craigslist. I know that the hydro date is expired on the tank and I will need to re-certify it (which goes for about $15 in my area). What is a good price, I just don't want to overpay.

    Refrigerated Hops

I am sure that this has been discussed before, but I could not find anything posted. How long can whole hops be refrigerated before they go bad. I am going to be brewing this weekend and I have had some hops in the refrigerator for over a month. I am not sure if they are still good, or if I...

    Hello from Colorado

Well I have been sitting back just reading for the past few months and thought I should finally introduce myself. I can't even tell you how helpful HBT has been in answering my questions as I am continuing to learn. I have about 6 extract brews under my belt and am looking forward in starting...
