    Barley Crusher or Crankandstein?

I own two Monster Mills - a 2 roller and a 3 roller. I have a 15 gallon system at home and also have a 26 gallon system with a friend at his house. I highly recommend the Monster Mills! Both mills have the 15 pound hopper. The 2 roller and is powered by a cordless drill and does a very good...

    Batch Sparge vs. Fly Sparge??

It would appear from the chart that there is only 2-3 percent increase in efficiency with the second sparge but I could save 15-20 minutes. 2-3 percent is about the equivalent of 25 cents worth of grain in a 5 gallon batch. Sounds like a reasonable trade off to me. Thanks Denny and Bobby!

    Mashing with Rice Hulls

Yup, you're over thinking it. The rice hulls don't form a mat or cake on the bottom, they intermingle with the grist just like the hulls from the barley intermingle. The rice hulls make the whole mash looser, kinda like a sponge, helping to prevent the grain pieces from sticking together...

    WOW! Hoprocket!

I have also been thinking of the fire extinguisher clamp idea but I want to use one with a metal band clamp. While the Hoprocket does get very hot, I'm not sure if it would be hot enough to melt the plastic. The metal clamps just seem like they would hold up better in the long run.

    WOW! Hoprocket!

It is a very cool device. It adds hop aroma after the boil and it also acts as a filter prior to my plate chiller. I have also used it strictly as a filter by filling it with rice hulls without the hops.

    Batch Sparge vs. Fly Sparge??

I have wondered what the difference would be with less time. My method came from an article I read (can't remember where) and has worked very well for me so far. Since I just finished my new brew sculpture with pumps, I was thinking about trying a shorter time with the batch sparges and doing...

    Batch Sparge vs. Fly Sparge??

I batch sparge but do it slightly differently - something I read in an article somewhere. I do a double sparge, meaning that I add water a third time. I calculate my initial strike water to my desired water to grain ratio and expected first run-off. The remaining sparge water is divided into...

    Mashing with Rice Hulls

Rinse them off and dump them in. I dump them after adding the strike water, then mix in the grain - they intermingle and keep the grain bed from compacting. I use them in every recipe, which is probably not necessary but I had a stuck sparge during my second all grain batch a couple years ago...

    Mashing in a Keggle question

I have a keggle MLT that it not direct fired and I have made 5 gallon batches without a problem. I used 1/2" EVA foam as insulation, wrapping around the side and bottom (and for now held on with duct tape!). It holds about 2 degrees in a 60 minute mash, measured with a lab thermometer, which is...

    What is the best micro-brewery

Bear Republic in Healdsburg, CA followed very closely by Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa. Both have outstanding brews, excellent people, and good food. Those are my top choices locally but I am willing to go on a cross-country pub crawl to do an "official" test! :mug:
