    Flour Mill for grinding grain?

I picked up a flour mill at a yard sale this week-end. It uses an electric motor to turn a round stone, grinding the wheat against a SS plate. It has a coarseness setting to control the gap between the stone and the plate. I'm hoping to use it to mill grain. Anyone tried something like...

    Sparkling Cider in wine bottles?

I am going to make some of my Apfelwein sparkling, and am wondering if it's ok to use wine bottles and corks? I was going to prime to roughly the same level as my ales, about 90g dextrose to 10 litres. Would this level of carbonation push the corks out? Should I stick with crown capped...

    Regulator rebuild?

My reg needs some work - it's leaking from the backside. There's a large nut, that when I remove it there's a spring under it. Not really a nut, of course, it's kind of a bolt hollowed out in the middle where the spring sits. I cleaned it all up, and put it back on together, but it's still...

    Winter Ale recipe request!

Has anyone tried the Great Lakes Brewery Winter Ale? Just had one tonight, and I am duly impressed. Label says orange, ginger and cinnamon, and the three are blended very nicely. I'd love to have a starting point for this. Anyone?

    old DME

My LHBS found a few old packages of DME that were forgotten in a cubboard or something and gave them to me. They're of uncertain vintage (age measured in years, I'd guess) and have hardened into 'bricks'. Are these usable? He wasn't sure, and suggested trying to disolve them in water.

    Hoptical Illusion - Robert Simpson

Well, stopped by what used to be the Robert Simpson brewery a couple days ago. Looks like they're repositioning themselves, changing their name to 'Funky Monkey' or something (no, I'm not kidding) and have a new brew they're calling Hoptical Illusion, a 'nearly pale ale'. With the name and...

    setup to clean draft lines

I was down at the Robert Simpson Brewery the other day, and they have a setup to clean out draft lines. Looks to be a plastic bottle that you fill with a cleaning solution, that has a hand pump and a ball lock post attached to it. The idea would be that you hook up your line, and hand pump...

    soda not carbonating

Something is just not working for me. I have tried to make soda in some 2L bottles twice now, and no carbonation. I tried to go simple to start, just wanted to show the kids how it worked. Ginger ale was made with sugar, lemon juice, ginger and some fleishman's yeast. When that didn't take...

First time cold crashing and kegging

Ok, so the temp is just right up here in Canada - thermometer says it's just shy of 40F outside, so I put my beer on the porch, and I'm was going to leave it out there for the day, and keg it tonight. Is 6-7h at that temperature enough to make the yeast fall out and clarify the beer nicely...

    Lalvin RC 212

A quick question about this yeast and it's properties and uses? Will it yield me a dry wine or sweeter....what is the typical FG when using this yeast? Does it have any qualities I should be concerned about if I use it for apfelwein? Or am I better of using a different yeast. My lhbs does not...

Question about Aplefwein and Bourgvain Lalvin RC 212

Went to my lhbs and he did not have the montrachet so I asked for a dry white wine yeast. He gave me the Lalvin Bourgvain RC 212. I did a search on this site for it and found it is typically used in a fruit wine. I tried to muddle through the apfelwein thread and after reading the first 25 pages...

    Turkey fryer didn't boil water!

Well, I tried to do a full boil using my turkey fryer last night, with no luck. The pot that came with it is about 30litres (4-5" from the top with 23 litres in it), and I thought it should work. It was close, and the wort occasionally looked like it was doing a bit of a boil, but I could...

    Anybody hear of Chempro SDP?

I just got a sweet deal on a bunch of home brewing stuff, kegs, Grolsch bottles, hydrometer...etc. In the box of stuff I got was a box labelled "Winemaking & Brewing Steriliser Chempro SDP" Has anyone heard of this and if so is it safe to use or should I just chuck it?

    DME vs LME

In most of the discussions of malt extracts, it seems that Dry Malt Extract is preferable to Liquid Malt Extract. Why? I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before...but searching for those terms hits just about every thread in this forum!!!

    Marking bottles

I'm curious how people are marking their bottles to track which batch is in each. With 3 or 4 on the go, it's pretty easy to mix them up once they're in the fridge. With glass bottles and crown caps, I've been using a sharpie to mark the cap. With PET bottles, different colour elastics around...

    Hello from Ontario

Just joined - I'm from Grey county, about 2h NW of Toronto. I homebrewed some years ago, while in university and for a while after, mostly extracts, occasionally tweaking things a bit. I stopped, couldn't say why, but something made me go buy a starter kit and try it again. Took me exactly one...
