how best to clean a dirty blow off tube

I didn't read all the suggestions in this thread, but I want to mention this: I bought a daypack for hiking from walmart and it has a refillable bladder inside. Company is Outdoor Products. They also sell a cleaning kit for the bladder and hose. I found the best brush for cleaning my...

Fermentation vessel for 1 gallon batches

Yes, you can use El Cheapo Wine jugs for fermenting 1 gallon batches. I have one of those and a 1 gal jug from LBHS and they have the same capacity. And if you're the artsy type, you can use masking tape and glass etching cream to make a measuring bar on your jugs. I did this for both of...

Think I may have bottle bombs...

Any time you think you're handling glass bottle bombs, wear work gloves and eye goggles at the very least. Have you ever seen bottle bombs on youtube? Scary.

I put a ball valve and dip tube onto a rubbermaid tote to drain the bottle washer I built recently.

MalFet's bottle washer for lazy homebrewers

Got my pump in the mail today, so I took 'er for a spin. Test run went great. I get plenty of pressure from the pump. The connecting hose was built on the fly at the hardware store. It's just clear pipe and some adapters to reduce the pump output to a normal garden hose thread...

MalFet's bottle washer for lazy homebrewers

OK, as promised I attached some pictures of my completed bottle washer. The manifold was made of 3/4'' copper and 1/4'' soft copper tubing. It's adapted to a regular garden hose thread. I can fit 20 bottles and I can always add 4 more if necessary. I rigged up a holder with some scrap...

MalFet's bottle washer for lazy homebrewers

Yup, that's the route I'm going to take. Thanks. I did some soldering today (my manifold is all copper) and used Mapp gas for the first time. So much better than propane - I'm never going back. Everything's coming out nicely and I'll share some pics when I'm finished.

MalFet's bottle washer for lazy homebrewers

Thanks for this how-to! I was inspired to build a bottle washer for myself, too. I went with a 3/4in copper manifold with 1/4 soft copper for the outlets. I'm using a rectangular milk crate as well. I could have squeezed in 24 12oz bottles, but I decided to go with only 20 to leave some...

    Who prefers bottling over kegging?

I bottle and don't want to keg. I've thought about it, but then I always wonder something: Let's say I took the time and money to build myself a respectable keezer, furnished it with kegs, CO2 tank, parts, hoses, etc. Then over time, there's an ongoing cost for electricity, CO2 refills and...

    Batch #1 - Update w/pics and questions

Looking good. Glad to see you solved your problem. Like the others mentioned, that's all normal. I like to rig up a blowoff for the first few days for any brew. Some blow, some don't.

Question about cops and for those who live in Association communities

I only read the first four pages, but here is something I didn't see mentioned... How about knocking on your neighbor's doors and being nice and explain that when you have that "thing" in your driveway that you're just brewing your own beer? Tell them if you're out in your driveway to feel...

Show us your DIY stir plate!

100% free stir plate made from garage scraps and stuff from the dead electronics pile at work. No real measuring, I pretty much eyeballed everything. The box is scrap wood, leftover plexiglass, screws and finish nails. Stained & finished just for looks. The electronics were pieced...

Perfect! That's exactly what I was looking for - thanks!

    Gravity equation?

Wow, thanks for your information! The second equation is way over my head, but I tried your first one. At first I got 1700°P which seemed to be way, way too high. I think it's supposed to be 17°P. Am I correct or do I need to try again? 2 Oz/( 100*(32 Oz + 2Oz) ) °P. Also, would the...

    Gravity equation?

Hello, homebrewtalkers! I've got a question. Is there an equation for calculating the gravity of a mixture of table sugar and water? For instance, if I dissolved 2oz of table sugar into 1 quart of water, there would be a way to calculate what the gravity would be, right? I know I could...
