I got to stop ruining my yeast

Well I managed to kill off another vial of yeast this week. I bought my ingredients and on the way home, stopped off at a store to run in and get something. About 15-20 mins later I jump in my trunk and drive home. The yeast vial feels a little warm, so I put into to the frig for the rest of...

    no yeast activity

I brewed up a wheat ale 2 days ago. Checked it this morning and there was no yeast activity. I cracked open my fermenter and there wasn't anything. The surface of brew was just like it was when I brewed it 2 days ago. No foam, no krasen, nothing. I am wondering if the yeast is not any...

bottle aging vs secondary aging for a winter ale

Ok, quick question here. I am going to be brewing up a winter ale for comsumption around Thanksgiving/Christmas. I am wondering after I rack it over to the secondary what would be better. To leave it in the secondary until the first nov then bottle or leave it in the secondary for 2-3 weeks...

    going through withdrawls

Dang, I am almost out of my first 2 batchs of HB. Having to drink the commercial stuff. Guess that will teach me to believe 4 cases worth will hold me over for awhile. Glad I have 3 batchs currently going in different stages (recently bottled, waiting to be bottled, and in the primary)...

    rishing gravity reading

Ok, I just bottled up my brown ale last night. When i brewed it I took a gravity reading and it was 1.042. A week later, I racked it over to my secondary and took a gravity reading at that time: 1.012. I left it in the secondary for little over 1 week, bottling it last night. I took my final...

    winter ale recipe

I looked around but couldn't find a good recipe for winter/holiday ale. Figure this is the time to brew it and let it age until this winter. Does anyone have a good malt recipe they would like to share? I apperciate it. Paul

    Which is better...purree or extract

I am thinking of doing like a cherry or raspberry wheat next. I want to know which is better the fruit extract or the purree. One HBS near my house has the extract only, while the HBS near my work has the puree.

    airlock sucks

Ok, did up my 4th brew the other night. Kinda rushed it a little bit, and by rushing it, I mean I didn't let my yeast sit out long enough to get a good start. I am using the White Labs yeast. I took it out at the being of my boil and placed the vial in a cup of warm water (warm to the touch)...

from the pot to the primary

I was just wondering something since I never read it in any of the home brew books. When you are transfering the wort from your brew pot to the primary fermenter, do you strain it to get out the hops and mass that built up during the boiling (irish moss)

rut row...I think I may have done something wrong

I decided to do a 2 stage fementation on my first brew. So I went and got myself a carboy to do my secondary fermentation in. Yesterday was one week in the primary, so I racked my beer over to my secondary. I siphoned it out of the primary into the secondary and everything with ok, I did...
