American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

Almost had a sticky mess this morning. When I woke up the primary lid was swollen up and the top of the lid barely contained the blow off liquid that came out.

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

Mine was 6.5 gal @ 1.062. I think its lower because I used 7-8oz maltodextrin which was meant for the 5.5 gal recipe.

    Recipe units

Im trying to calculate my efficiency but am unsure of some units. The formula I am using is Total gravity of wort/Total potential gravity of grains. What units should the volume be in? US gallons? or Imperial gallons? Also the recipes found on the forum usually state 5.5 gallons. are...

How do you guys do it?!?

I have a friend who invested in all of my brew equipment. He lives with 3 other guys who are all enjoy beer. In return I brew them a batch a week at cost and I keep a bit of the beer myself. It is a very nice arrangement.

Just to Clear up a few questions:

The yeast in the bottom is just yeast that has settled out and is still good. Your beer still has the ability to ferment because there is yeast still floating around. The amount of fermentation is mostly governed by the amount of sugars in your wort. I find I get decent carbonation after 1-2...

    Issues with boil duration?

How does increasing boil duration affect beer? I don't have my brewing process down to a science yet so sometimes at the end of my hour boil, I would have too much wort. Is it fine to just keep it boiling so more water will evaporate?

    bottling tips using only primary

I have just learned that it is very acceptable to use only a primary and it is not necessary to rack into a secondary for further fermentation. What I would like to fully ferment in the primary. When fermentation is complete I would rack into a different container in order to mix in priming...

    Leaving hydrometer in secondary

Wow thanks for all the responses. I just started browsing this forum and didn't realize it was so active. To answer a few of the questions. Why would I want to do this? Well my LHBS said my beer will be ready to bottle from secondary after 3 consecutive days of hydrometer readings where...

    Leaving hydrometer in secondary

I'm told that a few consecutive gravity measurements will indicate that my beer is ready to be bottled. Does anyone have any thoughts about just dropping my hydrometer in my secondary carboy and leaving it there so that I dont have to draw samples? I believe there is enough head space at the neck.
