High Heat + mold + stupidity

So now one of my esteemed buddies, who has been homebrewing since before I was born, tells me that I need to dump the beer. His words: "It won't kill you, but you'll be on the toilet for days if you drink that stuff." Granted, I didn't drink very much of it, but I felt fine. I'm still planning...

High Heat + mold + stupidity

Thanks guys. It's funny you mention the Better Bottle. I usually use one as a secondary, but I was extra lazy this time and didn't want to scrub it out. So I just used the bucket and hammered on the lid, with airlock, real tight, and then forgot about it because it wasn't in the (noticeable)...

High Heat + mold + stupidity

I started a batch of partial grain/extract porter a few weeks ago. Transfered it to the secondary, and then forgot about it. The past two weeks we have had an awesome heat wave, and my un-airconditioned house was over 100 degrees during the day. So I knew that my beer was going to taste funky...

Can I cork without a corker?

Can I cork without a corker?

I tap regular corks in using a rubber mallet. Seems to work. Sometimes they break, but no big loss.

    Honey Beesplosion!

Yeah. I know I need to get a hydrometer. I was pretty much guessing that since I hadn't seen any action in the airlock for a week it had to be done. But third batch and second explosion (first explosion was the airlock on my Better Bottle. Now I use a blow off tube). I love fermentation.

    Honey Beesplosion!

Bottled 50 bottles of honey wheat beer last weekend. To five gallons of beer (it had been in the primary 3 weeks and fermentation had stopped) I added 1 1/4 cups honey to prime. I think it might have been too much. Today I came home to a lake of brown liquid on the kitchen floor and a couple...

    Sugar cubes as priming agent?

Thanks! This makes me feel better about experimenting a little.

    Sugar cubes as priming agent?

Couldn't find this posted anywhere else, and I was wondering: has anybody tried using sugar cubes to prime their bottles? I know you can get little priming drops from some brewer supplies, and people used to prime by putting a teaspoon of table sugar in the bottle before filling them. I think 1...

How many brewers on HBT are female?

There are a lot of female brewers out there. But, I have found that the only way to get help without being made fun of in my local brewing supply store is to tell them that I am shopping for my Dad. There may be a correlation there between the ratio of female brewers to the ones who will admit...
