    Root Beer

Hey guys, I tried my first batch of root beer this past week. The flavor is great but I'm having some issues with carbonation. I kegged it at 30psi and when I pour the glass it fizzes like crazy but after a few seconds it appears mostly flat. Is this normal for Root Beer?

    More IBU needed, post kegging

So long story short, I bombed my rye ipa recipe. I'm left with an overly sweet beer. I'm looking to add some ibu's. My question is, can I boil some hops in water and then add the water to my keg? Seems I would get very good utilization and have a nice concentrated liquid to pour in the...

    sanke keg sanitation

I'm thinking about possibly using a sanke keg for a large fermentor. Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to clean and sanitize the inside? I will not have access to do it manually, maybe a carboy brush would fit. My idea is to remove the guts from the tap then use Tri clover...

How to convert sanke to ball lock

I know someone makes a kit to do this without cutting. I just can't seem to figure out who it was. Does anyone know?

    DIY plate chiller idea

hey guys with the talk the other day about cleanable plate chillers I wanted to run some ideas by everyone. I've been giving this a lot of thought and I don't see why it would be that hard. If anyone knows how to post an image let me know. My thought is use copper sheet, I'm not sure...

    Recycling.. Why don't we..

I don't know how many of you have gardens but one of the things I'm trying to do is recycle all my organic waste. This makes great soil for gardens and such. While I was thinking about this I started to wonder. Why don't we as a nation compost waste? Pretty much any paper, cardboard...

    black specs in my starter?

After my porter finished up I saved a bottle full of the yeast slurry. I've done this before and it has always worked well. I prepared a starter for this coming weekend and now I'm seeing a lot of little black specs, looks like coffee grounds. It is settled down with the yeast. Is this some...

is there a reason this pump won't work?

Guys I have this pump already, http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product2_6970_527_527 I know it is rated at 170* but my plan is to place it after the chiller so the temp will be cool. It is a diaphram style. Is there any reason it would not work or hurt my beer? I'm...

    How fine are hop pellets

Does anyone have an idea how small hop pellets are? I picked up some mesh for a kettle screen but I'm concerned it is a bit to large. The openings are .03" I believe, should be small enough to filter coffee grounds.

    Polish lager

Would anyone have a Polish Lager recipe? I have a polish freind and she like zywiec and Hevelius Kaper. I can't seem to find it here so we are thinking of trying to brew some. Any ideas?

    Advantage of a short boil?

I watched basic brewing the other day and they did a 20 minute boil, in order to get the right IBU he doubled the normal 60 addition. I was thinking this would be a way to save some time and propane. Any thoughts? We get bulk hops so the added cost is very small.

Efficiency, after mash or after boil, does it matter?

I'm trying to get an idea of how efficient my setup is. I don't have an exact measure of the post sparge volume and I forgot to get a hydrometer reading. I did do it after the boil. It came out to 68%, is this not a valid measure? The reason I want to know if for changine recipes and such...

Bottle condition vs keg and temp

I'm trying to understand what is taking place during the later conditioning phase once the beer is in a bottle or keg. I understand it ages and mellows but is that a function of yeast or just time? The reason I asked is we just bottled half our stout and keged the rest, put the keg in the...

    clearing and secondary

I'm trying to wrap my mind around why I would need a secondary in order to get the beer to clear? Would I not get the same result just letting it in the primary for an equal period of time? I do understand that for extended periods it is best to not be in a bucket but say I'm letting it...

I need to bounce some ideas...

I'm really interested in naturally carbing my beer before I bottle or keg it. I had a couple ideas on how I could ferment it to allow it to naturally carb. they both revolve around slightly modified corny kegs. The first idea was to either use 2 5G kegs or modify one to 7G, then add a...
