specialty malts and adjuncts - how to choose and use

This Sunday on the brewing network, the topic will be choosing and using specialty malts and adjuncts. I for one, will definitely be tuning in. Jamil is gonna be back. So if you're like me, not really sure when and how to use these malts, this should be a good show. just a heads up, brewfie

    steeping carapils malt

hey boo boo, yeah they are great over there. it is an extract/steep recipe ... with only dextrin as the grain. i brewed it anyway...but it will be interesting to see if there is starch haze. i steeped them for 30 mins at 155F. wait and see. by the way ... hows trinity bay these days...

    steeping carapils malt

just when i think i understand this hobby-nay, obsession- this happens. so the thought is: carapils may contain dextrins....maybe not dextrins may contribute to mouthfeel, body etc. ... maybe not so what about the conversion of starches in carapils? are the starches converted? if the...

    steeping carapils malt

So I was into the LHBS Brewing Centers, fantastic place by the way, and saw a cream ale recipe with just light LME and some "dextrin malt". I think thats the same as carapils. It was 3kg(6.6 lb) LME and about 300 g (10~11 oz) of dextrin. After some light digging around I have found two...

Determining OG from the Pre-Boil Gravity?

hey ajf , i'm not sure what gets left behind will change the grav. when you boil off to the 5.5 gal volume, won't the wort all have a grav of 1083 (including the 2 pts). So the 5.5 gals(less 2 pts) will have a grav of 1083 as will the 2 pts left behind?? Otherwise, the grav of the 2 pts left...

    Burner in doors

I have boiled in the basement with the humidex on high (basically an exhaust fan). I plugged the CO detector in the same room. The kind I have records CO history on a LCD display. It read 0 ppm the whole time (boil, post boil). Do I recommned it? no. Was it a stupid move? yes. I was...

    Keeping temp in oven

    Keeping temp in oven

hey, i do it alll the time ... the rate of heat transfer is proportional to the temperature difference. translated: "if the oven is close to 150 (usually 170-200 at lowest setting) when you put the pot/mini mashtun (started at ~150F) in there .... it'll hold very close to the temp." works for...

Super bowl + 2 kegs = good times

hey kalvin, first off the fire extinguisher has to be the co2 kind. I just took mine to a gas place and the guy repaced the valve, hydro tested and refilled it for me. He was a great guy and gave me great price on it. It'd prolly be cheaper to buy a new one if you were to pay full price...

    blow-off tube problem

hi, how much headspace do you have in your fermerntor. You indicate that you turn off heat over night. The temp fluctuation would have a negligable effect on the volume of the wort. The head space above the wort however, would change in volume considerably with temperature change. so if...

    Draft beer tower DIY

about keeping the beer in the lines in the tower cold: some bars run a chiller line along the beer lines. basically a pump which reciculates cold fluid along the beer lines from the keg fridge to the tap and back. i'm not up on the details but someone else here must be .... right on shawn
