    so many pears....

I hand pressed a measly 6 pounds of pears and hated it! The don't press easily because they're so mushy. I definitely recommend making or renting a press over a juicer or hand pressing. You'll go crazy otherwise.

    Cider batch #2

Allright... thanks for the info. I sort of thought that either of those could be case, but was "noob worried" that it might have been "infected" or something. Anything I should do in particular other than check the s.g. to ensure the yeast has finished?

    Cider batch #2

Ok... so I racked to secondary today and something interesting happened and I'm not sure it's a good thing. I did some research and found some info but only relating to other types of fermentation (i.e. beer), so I hope someone can help me out here. So... I tested the s.g. and the "floating...

    Cider batch #2

Yeah, I def need to build a press this winter... Hand pressing is for cavemen. ;) It took two 4 hour sessions with plenty of breaks to get it all processed and pressed but I'm a cheap sob, so I pressed every last possible drop out that I could by hand. At this point I'll probably ferment it...

    Cider batch #2

Some of you may know that earlier this summer I started a batch of cider using apples and cherries of my trees in the backyard. Well, we just did or second racking and tasting over thanksgiving and the turn out so far was good enough to encourage me to start a second batch. Batch number #2 -...

My 1st cider and it made my entire basement smell like eggs

H2S is one of thousands of naturally occuring gases that are formed during the decompostion of natural matter. It occurs in oil fields in greater quantities (I.e. death) because oil is essentially just REALLY REALLY old decomposed biological matter. In fact, most gas related deaths in the...

Brewing beginner - Mixed fruit ciders

So I picked my apples and went with the bing cherries, we ended up buying a food processor and shredding the apples and hand pressing both with cheesecloth. Ended up with aprox 10 gallons of 3/4 apple 1/4 bing cherry juice. What to do from here? I've heard wild yeast is a bad way to go, but have...

Hiyo! Check my intro post for more info on me and my whereabouts but enough about that... I'm a total newbie to brewing but my father and uncles have been brewing beers and wines for many years so I'm not totally "up the creek". Unfortunately, none of them have tried making any ciders and...
