Is there enough space in a keg for floating dip tubes and hydrometers?

Thank you for the reply, the confirmation it can work and the tip on the repeater. I was deciding between the CBDS and the 2.0 and was leaning towards the 2.0 because it seemed smaller and would take up less space. Likewise with the Tilt, it seems smaller than it's counterparts. Other...

Is there enough space in a keg for floating dip tubes and hydrometers?

I want to ferement and serve from the same keg and was wondering if there is enough space in a keg to effectively use a floating dip tube AND a Tilt (or similar) device. I was thinking the dip tube would interfere with the operation of the hydrometer.

Mash, what the heck does rise mean?

Just follow those steps, and go from there. The 5 minutes is for getting your grain up to 152 - doughing in/stirring and temp stabilization. If you remove the "5 minute rise" text, does that ease your mind? You are going to dough in, stir and do your best to get equal temps throughout the...

Anybody else brew beers you never really intend to drink?

The only beer I'd say I brewed that I had no intention to drink from the get go was a Chocolate Habanero Sweet Stout. A coworker had enjoyed some other beers I gave to him, and being a connoisseur of peppers, he asked if I could make a pepper beer. I said sure. He brought me some chocolate...

    1 or 2 primaries?

I believe you mean a secondary fermentor, not primary? No, they are not necessary. It was believed you could achieve cleaner flavors and improved clarity by racking to a secondary fermentor. That is not necessarily true. The biggest fear with only using 1 fermentor was autolysis (yeast...

7 Gallon aluminum tukey pot - all grain?

That is what I use. Would I like a bigger pot? Yes. If I had to do it over again would I get a bigger pot? Yes. I have brewed with it for years though. If the 7 gallon pot was a real issue, I could justify springing for a new bigger one, but I can't. I brew 5 gallon batches, it works for my...

    Beers finishing with some sweetness

you can test it before you splurge for another. In fact you should test/calibrate all your thermometers anyway so you know where you are at. Make a heavily iced glass of water and let it sit a few minutes. thermometer should basically read 32. boil some water, it should read 212 at a...

    Beers finishing with some sweetness

Since it has affected all your beers, I'd say something in the system is off. Are your thermometers accurate? reading low (150 when it is really 155) could contribute some perceived sweetness. You can sometimes tell this has occurred if there is more mouthfeel than expected.

    ECY12 Old Newark Beer

General consensus is ECY Old Newark Ale is the old Ballentine's yeast. That being said, I have used it, split a batch (American Amber) with WY1275-Thames Valley. It was ok, the 1275 was better. Just my two cents. I did culture some to give it another crack.

What to make with Wyeast 1275 Thames Valley

It would do well with any British pale ale. ESB, Best or regular bitter. I also made an American Amber, hop bursted w/ citra, and it was really good. It is actually rising up my chart of favorite British yeast.

    Do I really need O2?

That's what I do too. Just stir by itself. I use this http://www.midwestsupplies.com/mix-stir-agitator-rod.html Mine hasn't broken or anything after 20+ brews, so not sure where some of those reviews are coming from. But I have seen a stainless steel version.

New yeast!!! Pretty damn excited for this!

I have a question. New company's selling yeast, do they use already issued yeast or do they develop new strains? Do they find a cache of yeast that are out of rotation and 'resurrect' them, like East Coast Yeast did with ballentines? I guess the bottom line is...Are they offering new/different...

    What are you drinking now?

Souther Tier Hop Sun. Had a Green Flash Brewing West Coast IPA last night. Just a bit above my 'preferred' bittering range but wow, I still say it was phenominal.

Help me make my first stout!

If you only make 2 gallon batches, then you'll need to cut this bag in half and get yourself a base for it. Like 3 lbs liguid extract (light/pale) if you are an extract brewer, and steep the grain. Or mash half the grain with 4 lbs Marris Otter or other pale base malt. You'll be good to go...
