    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

Got mine all put together last weekend, and finally got it in a batch. I use brewersfriend for recipes/etc. and they also have an integration with tilt and ispindel. Pretty cool. Some takeaways: 1. I did water & OG method of calibration, using the online formula calculator. I learned that it's...

    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

The USB broke off my Wemos D1 yesterday.. luckily there were through holes, they just didn't seem to be soldered. So I clipped the port in place and soldered it back in. I don't have a tip fine enough to solder the actual usb pins on it, but it seems to be making solid contact since it worked...

    American hefeweizen yeast in IPA

ok, just tasted and took a gravity reading. Basically done at 1.012 but I think I'll leave it and keg either mid week or next weekend. Tasted pretty good, as expected there was no banana or clove - I fermented at 64F. A slight lemon note mid palate was a bit unexpected, but I found some other...

    American hefeweizen yeast in IPA

I just used this yeast last weekend in an american wheat beer, using citra and centennial as the hops. It's my understanding that there's not much in the way of banana or clove from this yeast, as those are mostly inappropriate in an american wheat. You should be good, I'd expect it to be more...

    NanoBrewery build

Sorry to hear about the well Hoss.. hope it rains a ton this season! RRR, if you're out that way I'd also recommend Prospector's Brewing in Mariposa and South Gate Brewery in Oakhurst. Prospector's recently changed brewers, haven't had a chance to try them out since the switch - but they were...

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

yeast balls are easy.. RYR I haven't been able to find locally in the two stores I've tried. Gonna try another two more today, at the very least maybe I end up with a couple more different brands of yeast balls.

    conical fermenter heater/cooler

oh sorry, I think I understand what you meant now.. you cut holes in the foam tape - not in the aluminum. LOL

    conical fermenter heater/cooler

Nice writeup. What do you mean by this line? "I then cut out holes where the Peltier chillers were to go" Can you show a picture of it? I would assume that you shouldn't have to cut into the block but rather put the chip on there and tighten the heatsink down to form a good connection.

    conical fermenter heater/cooler

Geoff, Did you test that the cold side actually gets cold? I had a chip recently that I tested to make sure it was working and nearly blistered my thumb - I didn't check the cold side of that one and put it back together assuming that it was working. After a couple days of it not cooling...

    SS 1/2" NPT needle valves?

Well.. that's 1/4" and brass, but yeah - something like that. Those prices are actually really good, $40 for a stainless 1/2" needle valve is half to 1/3 of what the cost on Mcmaster would be. That said, I've heard of people using gate valves on pump outlets and they were plenty happy. 1/2"...

    SS 1/2" NPT needle valves?

Someone just sent me a link to some valves, and I thought a needle valve for my pump outlet might be cool. Searched on homebrewtalk for needle valves and came up with your query. Here's the link I found: http://www.directmaterial.com/Stainless_Steel_316_Needle_Valves_10_000PSI_p/dcvns.htm

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

So I harvested 2 22oz swingtops from my first batch (6C of rice) . That was about two weeks ago. I noticed that they were both carbonating in the bottles even while being refrigerated. One bottle I took out of the fridge and left the swingcap loosely covering the top so that the CO2 can...

Help with Schematics for Herms electric BCS 460 2 element brewing system

Pretty sure all that means is that it's there replace the 5V VDDout that would be coming from the BCS. The circuit works when using the 5V signals coming from the BCS, so I don't think there's any preference for 6V over 5V when operating in "full manual" mode with no BCS present.

Help with Schematics for Herms electric BCS 460 2 element brewing system

Really, it can be any voltage as long as it's high enough to trigger the relays. Probably 6V was what he had on hand or could get cheaply.

How to measure ACTUAL fermentation temp?

I concur.. I'll add that the fermwrap is sort of double sided, there's not a hot side and a cold side - so insulating around the fermwrap makes it more effective. Which was one of the main reasons I started insulating my fermentors in the first place.

have two of the sight gauges, I recommend them to everyone that will listen.

How to measure ACTUAL fermentation temp?

nah, I have a jacket around the entire fermentor and it doesn't "trap" the heat all that much - I guess the top and bottom of the carboys are exposed, so it's not really the ENTIRE thing though.. It does take a little while to shed heat, but I keep the chamber much colder than needed and use...

How to measure ACTUAL fermentation temp?

Agree with the tape it to the side folks.. I use 2 bungy cords to hold a reflectix insulation jacket around my carboy - then I stick the temp probe under the bungy so it's held tight against the carboy. I've measured versus the core temp of the fermentation and there was no difference. I'd...
