    Cloudy beer from kegs

I've just got my kegerator set up and kegged my first two batches last week. However, the beer from the kegs is cloudy even after 9 or 10 pints have been pulled. My bottled beers were always clear with maybe a slight chill haze but the kegged beers are pretty cloudy. I never used finings...

    Wort chiller with aluminium pot

I've read that copper and aluminium will cause a reaction when in contact with each other. Presumably this happens slowly, however, do other posters do anything to prevent contact. e.g. taping the handles of the wort chiller where they hang over the sides ?

    Steeping Munich Malt

I'm trying to follow a homebrewer99's Paulaner hefe recipe with 4oz of Munich Malt steeping grains. In Beersmith it says Munich must be mashed. Any idea what I'm missing ?

    Passive oxide layer in pots

I have read in the pros and cons analysis of steel vs aluminium posts that it's easy to maintain the passive oxide layer. If you create it by boiling water in a new pot, what do you need to do to maintain it ?

    Krausen and high temps!

Arrived home today to this. Normally temperature control isn't a problem here.....one advantage of our crappy climate, but it's warm today. The stick thermometer is reading 75-77 which is too warm for Nottingham yeast. It has been fermenting for a little over 24 hours. Do you think the damage...

    Beersmith brew sheet confusion

I have put an extract recipe in to Beersmith. I have set the batch size to 23 litres. On the brewsheet it correctly says, "Batch size 23 litres" but then says "prepare 19.92 litres of water for brewing" What am I missing ? Does the water for steeping grains get excluded from the 19.92...

    Strange bottle conditioning

I bottled my APA 7 days ago. It was a bit of a disaster as the racking cane kept getting blocked with hops after about 4 gallons when racking to the bottling bucket. I lost about 15% of the batch because of this and therefore over-primed the beer because my calcs were based on 5 gallons...

Help with IBU in Beer Smith

I'm adjusting Orfy's Old Speckled Hen recipe for my batch size and hops. I put it in to Beer Smith and it spat out an IBU of 69. I'm expecting bitterness of around IBU 47 based on the original recipe. The IBU total in the ingredients below add up to 48. Anyone know why the IBU is calculated as...

    Bottle conditioning

Say if I chill my bottles for a couple of weeks after the initial 3 week room temp bottle conditioning, and then let them go back to room temperature, am I back to square one as regards cold conditioning ? i.e. is it as if they were never chilled ?

Adjust recipe for late extract addition?

I'm planning on trying the extract version of Orfy's Old speckled hen recipe this weekend. I was going to split the extract half and half. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the hop quantities if I do this ? Thanks Recipe below: US measurments for a 3 gallon Boil Pot TYPE: Extract...

    Palmer's Cincinnati Pale Ale

My first batch is bottle conditioning. I was going to try Palmer's Cincinnati Pale Ale recipe for my second batch this weekend. I imagine that many posters have brewed this recipe. I'm looking for a hoppy beer (say 4 on a scale of 1 to 5). Palmer suggests that you can optionally add more...

Day 11 -First time opening fermenter on first batch

EDIT: Sorry I meant to post this in the Beginner's Forum. If any Mods see this could you move it - Thanks I opened my Ale fermenter last night for the first time since brew day (11 days ago) to take a gravity reading. Airlock activity has slowed to approx 1 gurgle every 90 seconds. Below...

    Oxyclean alternative ?

I'm getting ready to bottle this weekend so was looking for a good bottle cleaner. As I live in Ireland I can't get Oxyclean. However, I did find a powdered "multi-purpose stain remover with Oxy-action" in a supermarket. The contents say: ">30% oxygen-based bleaching agent, <5% non-ionic...

    Beer on the brain

Since I brewed my first batch on Saturday I can't stop: reading about home brew, checking the temp of my fermenter, looking at the airlock, thinking about bottling it, thinking about drinking it, thinking about what I did wrong and how I'll do my next batch differently. Last night I poured a...

    Question about my recipe

I used the following at the weekend for my first brew. Coopers Real Ale hopped LME 1.7kg Amber DME - 1.25kg Safale US-05 yeast - 11g I should have read more threads on here before making this beer. I thought that because I was using hopped extract I could get away without adding...

    Gas burner

I made my first batch over the weekend and had difficulty keeping the large pot boiling vigorously while uncovered. Once I took the cover off it would simmer but not really boil. I was thinking of buying a an outdoor gas ring. Does anyone know what output I should go for ? The largest one I...

Confused about need to boil ?

I'm reading John Palmer's "How to Brew" book. I am using a can of Coopers hopped pale ale extract and 2lbs of spray dried malt extract instead of sugar. I understand that I don't need to boil the Coopers extract because it is hopped but do I need to boil the dried malt ?
