    First Partial Boil

I used one of the same company's kits about 5 weeks ago. It was a different recipe. But the yeast and malt extract are the same. (diff hops and grains) So no its not exact, but similar. After this one (the partial) is completed, I'll do a full boil of the same exact thing when the weather...

    First Partial Boil

TTB-J, ahhhh Yes! I didn't catch that. Funny! :) Oh yeah, I'm not opposed to full boils. I will experiment with these 2 kits and see what happens. If its not as good as the previous ones I've done I'll know why. If the weather were on my side I'd be doing full boils anyway. But I'm...

    First Partial Boil

TTB-J, what do you mean by "true"? I've done full boils so far based upon recommendations from more "senior brewers". Lots of good advice to be had here! What, in your opinion, is the drawback of partial boils? Or extreme partials like 1.5 gal?

    Full Boil

I've been boiling 5 and topping off to 5 at the end. You wont need to add much.

    First Partial Boil

Howdy! I'm 4 batches into the hobby. All of which were outdoor propane full 5 gal boils. I want to get some more beer started and its still a bit cold to be sitting outside doing this... I picked up a couple of "True Brew" kits at a new local home brew shop. Their instructions...

    Oldcastle Brown Ale (Newcastle) Clone!

Pretty well. It was my third batch. And my 2nd favorite of the 3. I got the recipe from Midwest. I enjoyed the Irish Red more. All in all this was a good batch and I will definitely make it again.

Looking for a bit more hops...

no, reds aren't traditionally hoppy. I like Red Seal. It's a red pale ale. I don't want it that hoppy. Not full on IPA style anyway. Just a touch more. I think next time I'll do that third hop stage. The flavor hops. As you said, this one didnt have that. I found a magazine full of clone...

Looking for a bit more hops...

awesome info. Thanks!!!! Would you say doubling the amount of flavor hops at the end of the boil is a good place to start? Then back off if needed? I'm not really sure how much flavor so much hops gives. Its gotta be one of those "experiment and see what happens" things. Maybe I'll...

Looking for a bit more hops...

My first batch is done. It turned out great. I am very happy with it. If I could change anything I would want a bit more hops in the final flavor. At what stage do I do that? Add more to the boil? Add hops and use a secondary fermentation? (so far I have only done 4 week primary...

    1st Batch - Results

On Sunday I drove home from an out of state trip (5hrs) and raced downstairs to grab my first finished homebrew out of the beer fridge and see if all the work had paid off... It did. :mug: :ban: And there was much rejoicing. :fro: I want to thank Revy and all of the others who...

    Foamy Wort Going Into Fermenter

Did our third batch last night... A newcastle brown style brown ale. We've done a red and an amber before this, both were liquid malt, this one was DME. Anyway, after cooling the wort we poured it back and forth thru the strainer a few times to get out some gunk and aerate it. Also...

3rd batch ever. Unsure about yeast starter...

starting gravity was right where it needed to be. We aerated the **** out of it before pitching the yeast. The wort was quite foamy. The first 2 batches we had werent like that. Hope that's ok.... Will check the airlock in the morning and see how its doing. (8-9hrs) Then again after work...

3rd batch ever. Unsure about yeast starter...

alrighty... What a night. We had our first boil over. (luckily were outside) I blame the DME. Never had one with the liquid malt... No biggy. More cleaning.... We also boiled 45 min before remembering the hops.... Dammit... That tacked on 45 min to the night. Gotta boil the...

3rd batch ever. Unsure about yeast starter...

I did boil it... But I'm not 100% sure that is not DME still. It was a very gentle boil. For a full 15 min. Gas on stove was all the way down. Temp was under 200 F but it was bubbling... If I dont see activity and I need to pitch fresh yeast, do you recommend making another starter? Or...

3rd batch ever. Unsure about yeast starter...

So I smacked the smackpack. It wasnt ballooning up like the 1st one did... Package said it didnt need toi expand all the way. Manufacture date on it is June 2010. It also said older yeasts take longer... 3 hours go by, not much expansion at all. I made the starter wort in the flask...

    Bottling From The Spigot?

if I'm getting a bottling wand we may as well talk about which one to get. The fermtech was linked on page 1 here. Someone else is having trouble with that one it seems. There is a spring loaded one too. Anyone here used both? Preferences?
