Best Place(S) to catch a beer in Asheville, NC

Personally, I think The Wedge has the best beer in town and the crowd is an eclectic mix. If you want a brewery tour (and something more mainstream that a bunch of hippies knocking back Hemp Ale), Highland Brewing is the largest in the area and serves up good beer...

Are you still buying commercial beer?

I buy microbrews when going to a social event where I know I will have to drink from the bottle. That's the only time I prefer filtered beers over bottle conditioned.

    Best Easily Available 12oz Bottles

If you live in the Southeast, Highland Beer has great bottles. Their labels peel off cleanly and always in one piece (without any soaking).

    Aged Blackberry Beer

Its all about personal preference. I do a blackberry wheat once a year and load it up with blackberries. Picked about 16 lbs of berries at the end of June and after freezing them to release the juices, I dumped 8 lbs of berries in 5.5 gallon batch. To me, blackberries have a subtle flavor...

    worst beer you ever made

Pecan Brown- Instead of roasting real pecans and mashing them, I decided I would buy some extract from a candy shop. Stuff was super concentrated... I poured in about half the bottle.:D It was so god awful bitter. Probably would have been better served by using it as a household cleaner...

    I think I'm burnt out on IPA's

I'm burned out on extreme beers in general. I still love hops, but would rather have them in a pale ale without the harsh bitterness. I have a rye pale ale and a mild that are my regular drinkers.

Strong and dark IPA... is this going to be drinkable?

Looks like you could probably let it age another six months to a year and call it a Barleywine. Glad it worked out for you.

Beer trip to Asheville, NC - looking for recommendations on "must-sees"

All the best beer places have already been mentioned. I love Mellow Mushroom, but their headquarters is in Atlanta, so Barley's is a better choice for pizza and beer. I've done the brewery tours at Highland and Pisgah. Highland is free, although they ask that you donate to their food bank...

    Brewmasters Warehouse

Ed, I added a Mile Ale recipe in the Brewbuilder a couple of months ago. The main ingredient is Mild Malt. Was planning on using the Mild malt for a Stout recipe that I am brewing in a few weeks and I cannot find it listed anymore. Was wondering if you still carry it? Dave

    New member from Charlotte, NC

Welcome from Monroe. For collecting craft beer bottles, I've found two local breweries, Highland and Duck Rabbit (last time I checked), both have peel off labels so there is no need to soak the bottles. Enjoy!:mug:

Whats your favorite food with a beer???

Pizza is probably tops on the list, otherwise, friend seafood, buffalo wings, and mexican food.

    Thoughts on Sam Adams...

Not the first brand I would reach for, but their Boston Lager is well-done. I must be in the minority because their Octoberfest ranks at the bottom of the list for me. I used to drink the Double Bock when I could get it and generally liked it. Sam Adams is the measuring stick for me when it...

Help me pick a yeast for my porter

I'd probably go with Notty. It should still give you plenty of American porter flavor and I really like its characteristics. Plus it is cheap.

    houston Pubs

Just stumbled on this. When I lived in Houston about ten years ago, my favorite place on the west side was Richmond Arms. If it is still around, it is worth checking out. I still remember being there the night the Houston Rockets won their second World Championship.

    Should I be concerned?

I recently purchased a freezer and ranco for fermentation and I've noticed mold growing on the inside lids of my plastic bucket fermenters. This never happened when I used a swamp cooler, but I suppose the close warm quarters of the freezer is a different climate. I have a renewable desiccant...

    Hello from NC !!!

Not yet, but I probably will do so in January. I've heard nothing but good things from folks who are involved in the CB.

    Storing Hops from hops direct

I purchased a Pump-n-seal http://www.pump-n-seal.com/ in September for this very reason and it has worked great. A one pound bag of pellets fits perfectly in a quart-sized Mason jars. The jars seal tight and the little sealers will work indefinitely.

How long should you leave oak chips in the secondary?

For scotch ales, I usually soak one ounce of chips in scotch for a couple of days and then oak for about a week. But this is style that improves with cellaring, so you could probably go a little longer and still be ok if you age the beer properly. If you are in no hurry, you could use oak...
