    IPA questions

Thank you, I will look for that and try it. As to the other questions, I am an extract brewer, hence the post in the extract forums. I don't know exactly what it is about Cascade hops... I guess it seems almost generic to me. As for the beer I had, I don't know what it was. I just liked the...

    IPA questions

Someone HAS to have an idea for what I am looking for. I am looking for an IPA with a punch in the mouth of light-flavored hops, with a strong malty finish. I am fairly certain the hops used were Summit, if that helps at all. The key here is that the hops came out strong and bright, but the...

    Don't tease me

Haha, fair enough. It smells decent so far, but time will tell. The question I had is not how to calculate the ABV, but rather an estimation of the OG, since I didn't check it with my hydro. Any ideas what pure cane sugar adds to water gravity? 6 lbs sugar in 5 gallons water?

    Don't tease me

So, after brewing beer and mead, and making apple wine, I was talking with a friend at work who doesn't drink much at all. He came up with the brilliant idea of making Kool Aid wine. Yes, I know, Kool Aid. Anyway, I am not trying to make hooch. I have been on these forums awhile looking for...

    IPA questions

Well I tried another, called "Amarillo IPA" which I assume means they used Amarillo hops. I am a little unsure of how to tell what hops I want to use. Just mess around and test different recipes I guess? Also, how do I leave a note of malt flavor in the beer after fermentation?

    IPA questions

So, I tried an IPA from a local brewery, which was phenomenal, and I would like to try recreating it or something similar. I have been brewing mostly from kits, since I am still new to this, and I noticed that many of the kits I buy have Cascade as the hops, which I don't really care for. Hence...

    Stabilizing

So I am bottling my 5 gallons of Ed Wort's wonderful brew today, and I need to stabilize it so the bottles don't blow up on me. I bought some Campden tablets from the shop, as well as some stuff labeled "Stabilizer", which is white stuff that is not really a powder, but looks more like the...

    Side-by-Side to Fermentation Chamber Build

Is this something you can do over the phone? I mean, I don't have any of the stuff I need yet, but I plan to start looking for it. If I can find a fridge with the wiring diagram, I can scan it and post it for you. This would be an amazing addition to my setup. I just don't want to electrocute...

    Side-by-Side to Fermentation Chamber Build

Wow this is incredible. Any advice for someone that knows nothing about electrical wiring? Is there a less... dangerous approach?

Lagering setup and more equipment questions

So what is the best method for doing this then? Just buying a fridge and then google "temp controller"? You don't leave the thing running all the time do you? Just when you need it?

Lagering setup and more equipment questions

I have become smitten with brewing, and wanted to start the long process of improving my setup. Here is what I am working with right now: 2x Buckets - Food grade plastic, drilled lid for airlock, both have spigots in the sides at the bottom for racking / bottling. 2x PET Carboys - Stoppers...

    store bought honey

My LHBS has local unprocessed honey at like $3.50 for a pound countainer, and something like $27 for a 10 pound container (I think). Seems to me, you should be able to find better honey for a comparable price. I mean, 5 pounds of local honey here, bought as single pounds is... $17.50. Even...

    Smells any concern?

Not going to affect anything at all then? I am totally safe to use it?

    Smells any concern?

I recently used my fermenter to make a batch of Root Beer, which I bottled that day. My question is that I am now mid-brew for a Dead Guy Ale clone, and I washed my fermenting bucket, and it still smells like Root Beer. Is this going to make my beer come out weird?

    Question about corks

Very good. Thank you for the input! Is all wine made better through aging? Say I left a bottle of EdWort's for like 4 years with a good cork, would it be significantly better than a bottle that is, say, 1 year?

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

    12,134.5 + 5 = 12,139.5 Got a batch fermenting right now!

    Question about corks

Ok, that gives me something to think about. I didn't have the money at the time to get the more expensive corker, but I will certainly invest in one. You think my apple wine will be fine for up to six months with the #8 corks? Also, are there different types of corks, or just different sizes...

    Orange Juice Wine

Hard to describe. Salty, a little nutty sometimes. :)

    Question about corks

So I recently bought some plain wine bottles (I guess they are standard bottles) and some #8 corks. I plan to bottle my apple wine for about 5-6 months, and wanted to know how well the #8 corks are going to work out. The guy at the LHBS said that #9 is the industry-standard cork, and it has...

    Looking for simple mead recipe

I have been brewing beer for just over a month, and brewing wine as well, and thought I would try my hand at mead. I am looking for a recipe that is simple, fairly inexpensive, tastes good (read: not too much like wine), and can be scaled to a small 1-gallon batch. I want to make 1 gallon to...
