Should side shoots/arms be trained like the main bine?

2nd year hop grower here. Lots of side shoots this year, particularly on my Goldings (the Cascades less so). The past couple of days have seemed to really spur them on - some are over a foot long. Should I try to train these like the main bines or let them just free grow?

moving CO2 tank from cold to warm?

I'm about to keg a beer I brewed for my family's July 4th party. My home setup has the CO2 tank in the fridge next to the keg. When I serve the beer on July 4th, I'll need to keep the keg in a cooler on ice, but the CO2 tank will need to be outside the cooler. I've never done this, so I...

    1st year hops

I planted 4 total rhizomes in the spring - 2 Cascade, 2 Goldings. I only have 7 total cones - all from one Cascade bine. The Golding look great, though short (only ~6 feet) - lush, green...but zero cones. The Cascades grew taller (10-12 feet), but looked "iffy" all season - certainly less...

Weird looking leaves...is this a problem?

Some leaves on one or two vines look like this. They are in the middle of the bine. Newer leaves look great. Any idea what caused this?

    Side shoots?

This is my 1st year growing hops and was wondering what to do with these side shoots. Cut the off? Leave them? Train them? Also...is this normal? And why are they so much lighter than the main bine?

    string/wire for hops?

I'm going to be planting my first hops this spring (two each of cascade and goldings). I have the gist of how to set it up, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to use for the bines to climb - wire? if so, what gauge? twine/string? if so, how thick? I assume it needs to be thicker than...

    complete kegging noob questions

I'm not going to lie...I feel a bit embarrassed to be asking some of these questions given I am 42 years old and have been brewing for over 10 years. BUT, this is my first foray into kegging, so I guess it is all OK :o 1) Transporting, kegged, carbed beer (about an hour drive) - shut off gas...

    miniregulator and 1.75 gallon keg

I am about to keg for the very first time...after many years of bottling. I have a small (1.75 gallon) keg and a miniregulator - like this http://www.homebrewfinds.com/2012/04/hands-on-with-leland-mini-co2-regulator.html, but on a smaller keg...

    1.75 gallon kegging system question

After 5+ years of bottling, I'm finally looking to start kegging some of my beer. I don't have a ton of space and I brew small batches, so I am really intrigued by this system offered over at Williams Brewing - http://www.williamsbrewing.com/175-GALLON-KEG-INJECTOR-SYSTEM-P3334.aspx The...

Does acidulted malt need to be crushed?

While at my LHBS I forgot to get acidulated malt for my next batch- a light-colored summer ale. I normally use acidulated malt to dial in my mash pH and for this batch I will need ~2oz. I happen to have a small amount uncrushed that I could use and was wondering if I needed to crush it first...

    Burnt caramel/sugar

Has anyone ever used burnt caramel/sugar in a recipe? I have plans to make a big RIS and want to include some homemade caramel sugar (links to images of what I am referring to). I purposely overcooked a batch to get a burnt/smokey character - it is very deep brown, almost black in color. I...

British Brown Ale Abscission Ale (Tumbler clone)

Not sure if this is an English- or American-style brown ale...basically English-style ingredients except for the yeast. I brewed this to be similar to SN's Tumbler and it turned out to be one of the best beers I've brewed. I was shooting for a slightly higher OG and a slightly lower FG (was...

Beer bar recommendations - by state

LAST UPDATED on 8/30/13 A recent thread about best beer bars in your state - https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f14/single-best-beer-bar-your-state-426573/index4.html - got me thinking that we could use a single list of suggested establishments organized by state. Perhaps this already exists...

    50-50 Eclipses

I found a local beer shop that has 5 or 6 different versions of Fifty-Fifty Eclipse. 22oz wax-topped bottles @ $35 apiece. I'm not familiar with this beer or brewery. Are these worth picking up?

beer pushing out of secondary airlock

This is a new one for me. I have a Wee Heavy/Strong Scotch Ale sitting in secondary bulk aging. I went away camping for 3 days and when I came back I found that the beer had pushed up into the airlock (see pic below). I brewed this beer on March 29th. OG = 1.080 yeast = WLP028...

    Pretty damn proud of myself

I just finished relacing my "vintage" Rawlings Cal Ripken Jr baseball glove (circa 1986). My son (9 yrs old) had been using it during his baseball season until the lacing around one of the fingers snapped yesterday. He's got one more game left this season and I certainly wasn't buying a new...

    aging beers in fridge

I just acquired a second fridge so I can store more of my beer cold. However, I was wondering if the fridge is the best place to keep beers like barleywine, RIS, wee heavy, etc. Or should I continue to cellar these out of the fridge (where my temps may range from 55-75°F over the course of the...

    Maple sap

Just brewed a beer using maple sap in place of water. It was a small batch since I didn't have a lot of sap and since I wanted this beer to be 100% sap-based. Just thought I would share a few notes about my experience brewing with the sap: specific gravity of my sap was 1.006 the sap...
