I only made one trip to my LHBS so far, and they were really honest and helpful. If somebody talked to me like the story you just described, I'm pretty sure I'd never go back there again.

So yesterday I had some great airlock activity 10 hours after pitching yeast (see video here), but it 100% stopped several hours later (got a lot more vigorous than the video I posted, before stopping). The batch is a brown ale (liquid extract + specialty grain) with an 11gram Windsor dry yeast...

haha, the fermenter's in a closet and my light in there is really dim so the lighting was terrible when I first uploaded it to youtube. So I added the flashlight the second time around to actually see it better :)

Haha, heck yeah Airlock's rule! In the video it's bubbling about every 2 secs, but it's now bubbling every second... crazy! I hope this thing doesn't blow!
