Flat Beer... help me fix it

OK, here is what happened... I’m fairly new at homebrewing. The last two batches I made (all from*alternative beverage) have called for 1 cup of priming sugar right before bottling. Both of those batches came out way overcarbonated (to the point where you can only pour half a bottle of...

    Carbonation - large bubbles

I've made 5 batches now (extract kits). The carbonation came out pretty nice on the first 2, but my last 3 seem over carbonated to me. Not only that, but the bubbles in the head seem larger than they do in commercial beers. The recipes I've been using call for 1 cup of priming sugar...

First full boil - reduce amount of hops?

OK, got a turkey fryer for Christmas and I'm attempting my first full boil tomorrow (5 gallon). Here is the kit I am brewing: http://ebrew.com/amber_ales/90_minute_double_pale_ale.htm It says "Notice the different bittering level based on a partial boil (88 IBU's) and a full boil (134...

    Any deals on turkey fryers?

I've been on the lookout for a turkey fryer to move my brewing operation outdoors. I was hoping there might be some good deals on these after thanksgiving but I haven't found any yet. Anyone seen any good deals or know the best place to look? Thanks.

Want to get started kegging… how much is this gonna cost me?

I’ve been brewing for about a year now (just extract batches so far) and I’d like to start kegging. I’ve done some reading, but there seems like a lot of stuff to buy and I’m having trouble getting a handle on exactly how much all of this stuff is going to cost. I think...

    Bottling Interrupted

I was just getting started bottling tonight when the power went out. I had already boiled the priming sugar, but luckily hadn't started racking to my bottling bucket yet. My question is can I still used this priming sugar? It is still in the pot, and after it cooled I just covered it with saran...

About to bottle.. maybe I should wait?

I need some quick advice. I was going to start bottling my second batch this afternoon (Irish Light Ale). It was in the primary for a little over 3 weeks and has been in the secondary (dryhopped) for 1 week now. I moved the carboy to the kitchen last night so everything would settle down...

    When to measure starting gravity?

For extract batches, when are you supposed to measure the starting gravity? I always thought it was after adding top off water, but before adding yeast. This webpage seems to indicate that it should be measured before adding top off water. Maybe this is only for full boils? Using and...

The eyes broke out of my carboy

What, you didn't know they had eyes? It hit the side of the sink while I was cleaning it... not very hard either. Guess I need to look into getting a better bottle.

    Tasted my first brew

Well, after lots of hard work... and lots of waiting, I tasted my first beer. It is a brown ale extract kit (newcastle clone) and I was a little disappointed. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. It has been only been in the bottle for 2 weeks, so I'm hoping it will continue to improve with...

    Carbonating Temperature

I just bottled my first batch this past weekend. The closet where I have my brew stored stays around 64 or 65 degrees. Is that close enough to 70 to carbonate ok? Maybe it will just take a little longer to be fully carbonated?

    OK to use old carboy?

I had a really old glass carboy in the attic. I got it down and cleaned it the best I could. Cleaned it, soaked in oxyclean overnight, and rinsed plenty of times. It is soaking with 1 gallon of sanitizing solution right now. Is it ok to use this thing as a primary? I want to see my brew...

How important is it to take gravity readings?

My first batch is in the secondary right now and I was planning to bottle this weekend. Stayed in primary for about 8 days and has been in the secondary for close to 2 weeks. I haven't been checking gravity like I should have... I forgot to take an OG reading. The lid on my plastic primary...

How important is it to leave lid off during boiling?

Made my first batch last week and it is still in the primary now. I’m reading How to Brew now and I just saw where he recommends to leave the lid off during boiling to let some things escape and avoid off flavors. How important is this? I left the lid on or slightly cracked most of the time...

My first Brew Day - Pics

Well, Tom Petty was right. The waiting is indeed the hardest part. Brewed my first batch list night... Newcastle clone extract kit. It took longer than I was expecting, but i think it went pretty well. I ended up pitching yeast right after midnight. Fermenter is bubbling like crazy right now...

    Yeast problem?

Tomorrow is supposed to be my first brew day, but I may have a problem. I got my ingredient kit as a Christmas gift. It came with a package of liquid yeast from wyeastlab. I just read the back of the package and it said to break the inner package and wait 3 hours for it to swell before using...

I just got this kit for Christmas and I have a couple of questions. Brewing Starter Kit :: Midwest Supplies Homebrewing and Winemaking Supplies 1) I also have an ingredient kit, so I think I am only missing one thing to get started... a mesh steeping bag. I was planning to pick up one of...
