    Stupid Hurricane...

Flooded the basement with half an inch of water, which means if I want a beer, I need to get my feet wet. So I'm drinking whiskey. How's everyone else in the northeast dealing?

Northerners: Post your 2011 summer brewing schedules

Since all you southerners have already started brewing, and we're finally getting rid of the last of our snow :cross: Here's what I'm planning (alphabetical, since I have no idea what order I'll actually go with): Amber Ale (by KingBrianI) California Common (by Yooper) Brown Porter*...

    Oatmeal Stout Mash Temperature

I have an ingredient kit that I purchased from NB and it says to mash my oatmeal stout at 153*. That seems low to me; I would have expected 156* or so to get more body. Anyone have an opinion?

New kegs, weird pressure release valves

I have some new kegs that have some pressure release valves that I can't figure out how to operate. Does anyone else know how to use these?

    Score!

My wife's uncle owns a restaurant. He stopped by for Christmas and saw that I had a corny keg, and said, "I've got about a dozen of those in the back, we don't use them any more. Do you want them?" So today I got 10 used pin lock kegs for free. Two of them are completely full of syrup, and...

    Seasonal Brew Recipe

I have been wanting to make a seasonal brew, and I suddenly realized that I was out of time and need to make it this weekend if I want to have it for Christmas (and even then, only if I force-carb). So this is what I came up with. It's based on a Sam Adams Winter Lager clone: Grains: 6 lbs...

    Help! Leaky mash tun

The silicone that keeps my mash tun from leaking around the drain has stopped sealing. I dumped my strike water in, and within 5 minutes had lost more than 1 cup. I'd hate to abort the brew day, is there anything I can do?

    Chest freezer - good deal?

I am looking at a 5 year old 13 cubic foot Electrolux chest freezer through a Craigslist posting. It has some minor rust on the outside. I have not yet seen the inside. The seller is asking $90, does this sound like a good deal? I suggested that I would prefer to pay around $65 due to the age...

    Dual-use Refridgerator

Is there any way to use a fridge with attached freezer for both fermentation temperature control AND chilling beer to drinking temperatures? Obviously, if you are doing lagers, you could just share the compartment, since the desired temperatures would be similar, but what about if you are doing...

    Kid Rock beer

Seriously, I just read that Kid Rock has launched his own brand of beer called Badass: Kid Rock Launches His Own Brand of Beer | Scanner Sounds awful :p

    KAB4 vs. KAB6

I am looking to buy a burner so I can brew outside (getting tired of cleaning the stove, and it's not quite powerful enough). Currently I have a 10gal aluminum pot, and I brew 5-5.5gal batches. If I bought the KAB4, would I wish I'd spent the extra $25 for the KAB6? I'm sure the KAB4 would be...

First AG Friday, how's my recipe?

I'm going to brew my first AG on Friday (picking up the ingredients tomorrow evening). I've come up with a recipe based on https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/100-shilling-scotch-ale-2050/ but lighter. I just wanted a quick sanity check that this looks appropriate, doable, and tasty: Batch size...

    Priming Question

I brewed a Hefeweizen that I just bottled two days ago. The FG was 1.022 or so, which seemed high, so I decided to use 3/4 the usual priming sugar in case the yeasties continued eating what was left. Turns out that the bag of priming sugar I grabbed was only 1/2 full, so when I used 3/4 of...

    Off to Amsterdam

Leaving for Amsterdam in about 6 hours, anyone have names of really good bars/coffee shops/...? Beer varieties that should be at the top of my list? Probably a little late to get any significant number of replies, but I didn't want to be swamped and need to choose between them all :cross:

    Beer for SWMBO

My wife doesn't like beer, but she wants to help me come up with a brew that she'd like for a party we're going to have over the summer (so other non-beer drinkers may enjoy it too). She likes sweet wines (Moscatto d'Asti and Bully Hill's Sweet Walter Red are her favorites). She also likes...

    Bag Squeeze Experiment

There've been a few threads along the lines of, "Should I squeeze the grain bag?". Here are a few: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/dont-squeeze-grain-bag-21712/ https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/should-i-squeeze-my-sack-46471/ https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f37/specialty-grain-question-96290/...

I so need an outside burner

I brewed up a 5 gal batch in a 10 gal pot today, no boilovers or anything, but somehow I still got a little bit of wort around all of the burners on my stove. That stuff if a b*tch to clean up! I think my next investment will be a turkey fryer or similar. What are people's favorite models...

    First Label

Second brew, but first label. My wife decided that, although she doesn't like beer, she does like artsy stuff, so she's the official label maker. This is for EdWort's Apfelwein: (if it doesn't work, hopefully this will) There's a bit of a story behind the name: She told me when I first...

    Apfelwein Bread?

Has anyone tried using leftover yeast (and perhaps some of the finished product) to make bread? Just curious if there are any special considerations for something like that, and whether any of the flavor would come through. EDIT: I used a Koelsch yeast, not the standard Montrachet.
