    Wyeast Problems ?

I'm a keep it simple guy and have been brewing my first batches with dry yeast. Now attempting some clones and they call for liquid yeast -- yes I can get a close match with a dry --- but I'm considering trying a liquid. One of our local brew shops sells Wyeast Activator "smack-paks" but...

Book: Brewing Classic Styles -- a question

Yes I have another question --- however this time I have actually read parts of the book so this may be more coherent. Again my topic of choice is converting Jamil's and Palmer's full boil recipes to your basic 3 gallon boil. On pages 35-38 they very clearly discuss this conversion process...

    First batch - first taste

So our first batch of extract based Alaskan Amber Ale hit 2 weeks in the bottle today so we cracked one to see how it was. Color - nice medium amber Clarity - we used a few Corona bottles -- nice and clear sediment on the bottom of the bottle Carbonation seems about right - looks...

English Brown Ale --- IBU tweak ?

I'm going to brew batch #2 --- a English Brown Ale - Southern ---- so this will be a malty brew. Using BeerSmith on the recipe I get a IBU of 12.5 --- which is in the lower range of 10-20 IBUs for a Southern Brown Ale. I'm tempted to do a minor hops boot to hit an IBU 15. I am indeed...

    Anyone using BeerSmith regularly ?

Download the trial software --- I'm going to do my 2nd brew in a few days. The brew shop gave me the stuff for a Nut Brown Ale - which looks very much like an English Northern Brown Ale. What I was aiming for was something more towards a English Southern Brown Ale ( a bit smoother sweeter)...

Question on recipe book by Jamil

I've just got the book "Brewing Classic Styles" by Jamil Zainasheff All of the recipes are geared to 7 gallons --- now on page 35 he talks about adjusting down to a 5 gallon recipe doing a 3 gallon boil. The text reads (using 3 gal): Boil all of your hops in half of your total malt...

    Bottle question

Hopefully we will brew our first batch this weekend - so bottling is a ways off. But I want to be sure there are no issues using clear beer bottles. We have something like 6 or 7 cases of Corona bottles that we can use. Somewhere I read that home brews may have issues in clear bottles as...

    Its time to brew

Man this must be rush hour here ... 11 or 12 new guys today ! I'm a hi-tek burn-out geek in Portland - my new gig is tek-support at a large high school. Its a very rewarding - positive - and enjoyable job. One of our science teachers brews and gave me a few bottles as a thanks for helping him...
