Advice on a Baltic Cherry Porter.

Looking for some advice on the amount of cherry product I should use on a five gallon batch. I'm using JZ's all grain recipe for Zek's Baltic Porter as my starting point for this recipe. I'm thinking about using some OFP Sweet Cherry Purée and not sure how much I should add. The LHBS I work...

    Using oak spirals for aging.

I'm working on a recipe for a pale ale based on a one off version of Twilight Ale that Deschutes Brewing made by aging Twilight in Pinot Noir barrels. Super tasty beer. My thought was to soak a couple of spirals in a jar with a bottle of nice Pinot Noir so the spirals soak up the Pinot and...

Pressure release valve failures on Corny Kegs.

Okay, so on two separate occasions of kegging beers in two weeks, I've had two pressure release valves fail. Prior to kegging, I disassembled the keg, cleaned and sanitized it and put it back together. Filled it with beer and added just enough CO2 to purge the O2. Pressure release valve...

Yeast starter with an Erlenmeyer Flask questions.

So I finally got the gear I need to do proper starters after doing the pot and growler technique for a while. I boiled the starter wort in the flask but what is the best way to cool it quickly? Clearly I don't want to use the ice bath method and risk thermal shock shattering the flask. Is...

    Edme Pressure Barrel parts.

Just came across a stash of Edme Pressure Barrel parts at work and wonder if there is anyone interested in them. I have several replacement taps and CO2 injectors. Let me know if anybody is interested. Cheers, Dukester

Number of batches from 20lb propane tank.

Generally speaking, how many batches can I expect to get out of a 20lb propane tank. I know there are a number of variables like batch size and burner type, but just in general. Two? Three? More than that? Cheers, Dukester

Building a motorized grain mill. Questions.

So we just had a new gas furnace installed in our house to replace our dead oil furnace. The install was today and when I came home from work, the installer had all of the parts of the disassembled oil furnace stacked on the lawn by his truck. The first thing that caught my eye was the blower...

    Oak cube question.

I'm currently aging some oak cubes in bourbon for a stout I'm planning to brew. Are these cubes something I can reuse for subsequent batches or should I toss them when I'm done and start over with the next batch. Cheers, Duke

Possible stuck fermentation on my American Stout

So I pitched a pretty healthy 1.5q starter into my wort and everything was going like gangbusters for a week, then it started to taper off for a week, and a week later, no activity in the airlock. So I started to prepare for bottling. When I moved the carboy from the dining room to the top of...

    Wyeast 3726 Farmhouse Ale yeast.

Have a local comp coming up that requires using the above yeast and I can't seem to find a lot of info regarding appropriate style recipes. The second requirement of the comp is brewing within Cat 16 or 18 of the BJCP. Is this a yeast that can be successfully used with any of the styles in...

Wheat beer fermenting. I haven't added yeast yet!

Okay, so I brewed up a batch of wheat beer and put it in the fermenter. The plan was to let it get down to pitching temp overnight while my starter finished getting ready. This morning I wake up and see the brew has already started a small ferment? Do I pitch the yeast anyway and hope it will...

Here's my available hops, what should I brew?

So I was gifted with some hops from a co-worker today that were just picked yesterday afternoon and I'm trying to look for suggestions on what I should brew. Here's what I have on hand: 1 oz. Centenial 5 oz. Magnum 8 oz. Newport. Any ideas folks? Cheers, Duke

    Off flavor on my Kolsch.

I corney kegged my kolsh about 4 weeks ago and primed it with corn sugar in the keg for carbonation since I haven't picked up a CO2 tank yet. I stored it in my basement for a few weeks which is nice and cool then moved it to my garage fridge when I was ready to cool it and drink it. I charged...

Corney Keg not holding pressure, how do I test?

I have a keg that I got second hand that is definately not holding pressure. I replaced all five of the seals but that doesn't seem to have addressed the problem. I didn't replace the valve poppet assemblies so can I assume that's where the problem lies? Any help is appreciated, Cheers...

Missed OG on Kolsch. Corn sugar?

Brewed a batch of Kolsch and missed my OG by about 10 points. I've calculated that about 3/4lb of corn sugar would do the trick to get back where I need to be. Any problems if I boil the corn sugar in a couple of pints of water, cool and add to the pitched wort? Cheers, Dukester

    Urnex instead of PBW?

I have easy access to Urnex which we use at work for cleaning our coffee brewing equipment and urns which is all generally stainless. Would this be a suitable substitute in lieu of PBW? Cheers, Dukester

    Cleaning and sanitizing grain bags.

Just curious what the thought is on the best method for cleaning and sanitizing grainbags? Should they be run through the dishwasher after cleaning all the grain out? Washing machine? Or just done by hand? Cheers, Dukester

Out of Iodophor. Bleach okay for sterilizing secondary?

I ran out of Iodophor and am ready to move my Hefe to secondary to seperate from trubb and finish fermenting. I don't have time to go to my LHBS for the next few days and wonder if it would be okay to sterilize my secondary with a weak bleach soluction per TCJHB. Any concerns about rinsing...

Anybody have a partial mash recipe for an IPA that favors floral and citrusy a la Double Mountain's Hop Lava or Laurlwood's Workhorse IPA? Cheers, Duke

Blackberry Wheat Beer question. Yeah I know, DWHAHB.

So I just cranked out my second brew after getting back into it after a 10 year hiatus. I had a grip of wild blackberries in the freezer and on the recommendation of my LHBS I made a Hefe with a blackberry infusion. In a nutshell, they recommended making the Hefe per their recipe and also...
