AHS Northwest Cascadian Dark Technique Question

The recipe from AHS for their Northwest Cascadian Dark Ale calls for a three gallon boil and then add the rest of the water at the end after the wort has been cooled. I am finally set up to do a full boil. Will doing a full boil vs a partial be a problem?

Adding Extract at end of the boil

I'm looking for new recipe and have looked at several styles. A couple of them said to had half or most extract at the beginning of the boil and then add the rest 30 minutes or 15 minutes from the end of the boil. My question is why? What are the benefits of adding extract toward the end...

    Fermentation chamber

I've been looking around but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I want to convert a chest freezer into a fermentation chamber. I don't have a deep wallet, but I have the freezer, tools and the skills.. What is the simplest way to do this? Is there instructions somewhere and I just...

    Another Yeast Question

I just brewed a pale ale (extract) using: 7 lbs pale LME 1 lb 60L Crystal malt 1 lb flaked rye. I tried to do a mini mash with the grains. I think I did a reasonably good job. Now to the point. My expected OG was supposed to be around 1.062. The actual was around 1.072. I pitched...

    Flaked Rye

After searching around a bit, I could not find a definitive answer. I want to do an extract brew using some flaked rye. It's part of a pale ale I want to brew. Will steeping be enough? Some say it is, other things I've read say different. So what is the consensus here among the real...

    Short Wort

I'm getting ready to bottle my first brew this evening and I think I'm probably at least a half gallon or so shy of 5 gallons? Can I boil some water, cool it and add it to the wort or just adjust my priming sugar mix a little and don't sweat it? :o

    Aging Question

I'm about to brew my first batch. I wanted to do it over a month ago, but had to go on a month long business trip. Scheduled for another 2-3 weeks in June, then 10 days vacation in July. All that said, I want to do a stout for my first brew. When I read the comments on the recipes I...

    First Attempt

I have a blog. It's mostly conservative politics and the name is tongue in cheek, but beer is the focus here. That said, I wanted to use my "nomme De Blog in my upcoming attempt to home brew. Herewith is my first attempt. I may refine it to include the actual style of brew when I finally...

Exploring The Idea of Home Brewing

Hi all, don't be put off by the name, I'm really quite peaceful. ;) I haven't brewed any beer yet, but I'm thinking hard about it. I love good beer, but I don't drink a lot. I might have a good ale with my meal at a restaurant or brewpub, but I don't drink much at home. So I'm trying to...
