    Is this wild yeast?

4 days ago I brewed an IPA and kept a sample in my hydrometer and its been sitting in the window sill this whole time. I noticed a bit of bubbling and now I have full-on fermentation and a nice krausen on the top. I'm guessing this is wild yeast...is it? If it is, how could I safely...

    When to check pH

I am working on an all grain batch and I was wondering when I check the pH??? Thanks!

    Gravity vs. Volume

Hey all, So, I decided to brew a batch today and came up with a question: Is it better to hit your OG and come up short on volume, OR is it better to miss your OG and hit your volume? I know that it would be ideal to hit both, but if that is obviously not an option.... Thanks

    Dry Hop (sanitized?)

I was just getting done bottling up some beer and now that my secondary is ready, I was going to rack my famous 3:33 IPA. I was going to dry hop with 2 oz of Cascade whole hops but was wondering about how sanitary they are. I didn't buy them from a LHBS. How do I proceed?

First All grain batch---something isn't adding up!

Ok, so I am going to make my first all grain batch and I am going off of a pretty vague clone recipe for the Stone IPA Ruination. 5 Gallon batch I've got 15 lbs of grain and it's asking me to mash with 1.5qts/lb of grain= 5.625 Gallons. Then its saying that I should sparge with 2 qts per...

All grain set-up or Kegging set-up???

Since September of 08' I've been making partial mash brews and would like to step up into all grain brewing...however, I would also like to get a kegging set-up. Unfortunately, I can't get both right now, so it has to be one or the other. Which upgrade would you choose? All grain gear or keg?

    Whirl Floc Timing

Ok, so I just brewed a Red Ale and I forgot to add the Whirl Floc. I just pitched the yeast and I was wondering if it's too late to add it into the primary? I know it's usually not necessary to add, but I've been happy with the clarity that it gives me. Thanks in advance!

    AAU's = ???

I am looking at some recipes and when it says 3 AAU of [insert hop type], what does that exactly mean? What kind of scale is it?

    Chimay Yeast

I thought I read somewhere that I could keep the yeast from a bottle of Chimay and grow it or something? Does anybody know what I am talking about?

    Beer Smith

Simple question: I bought some grains from a LHBS and on the reciept it's just called '2 row'. I am trying to add grain/extract to my recipe and there is no option for '2 row', what else is it usually called? Also, I have 7 lbs of Light Pale Extract...what's another name for that...

    Partial Mash Efficiency

I've read the wiki on efficiency and I think I understand it from the All Grain point of view, but how about for partial grain brewers like myself? How is efficiency calculated when you are using LME or DME and just a pound or two of grains or specialty grains? Is it even worth...

    Building A Recipe

So, I have found plenty of resources on finding and making certain recipes, but I wanted to take my hobby one step further into actually making my own. How does one go about starting out at making a recipe from scratch? I have taken clone recipes and tweaked them to make them more personal...

    IPA Gravity

So I brewed a batch of IPA the other week with the following: 1 LB 2 Row 1 LB Caramel (10) 7 LB Light DME 2 OZ Warrior 1 OZ Magnum 1 OZ Centennial (For Dry Hop) I started with a gravity at 1.080 4 Days ago I added my Centennial and stole a bit out of the Primary for a gravity...

    Briess 2-Row among other things

Ok, this is going to sound really stupid, but here goes anyway: What is Briess? Is it a brand, is it a particular grain? The reason I ask is because I am getting ready to boil a batch today and I wanted to to put all of my information in The Beer Recipator. Unfortunately, there is no...

    Noob Hop Grower

So, I have placed an early order for my hop rhizomes and after thinking about it a bit, I was wondering which varieties I should be growing. How much yield should you get ballpark from each variety? I have ordered Cascade, Chinook, and Crystal. I am planning on ordering more, but which...

    Huckleberry Porter

Ok, frankly I am not into fruity beers, but I was reminiscing with my wife last night after putting together a batch of beer, about the times we would sit on the dock in front of her parents cabin and drink Apricot Ale (wouldn't touch it these days). I was trying to think if there was ANY...

    Pitching in 5 minutes

So I just put together a Mild Brown Ale from Midwest and after reading a bit about it, I decided to add just a pinch...ok 3 pinches of some Czec Saaz Hops in addition to the the 1 oz of Perle and the 1 oz of Fuggle flavoring. I put it in with about 20 minutes left on the boil and I used about...

    Clarifying

My beer has been in the secondary for 10 days and is still cloudy. Is there a process to clarify the brew, or is it even necessary? The recipe is a light pale and I used crystal and cracked corn that seems to have made it cloudy with sediment. :tank:

    I can't hear my hydrometer

So, I've read all of the stickys about from racking off to the secondary and one comment seems to be popping up quite a bit, "your hydrometer will tell you". From a basics standpoint, I understand how to read it, but for some reason it's not telling me anything simply because I'm not sure...
